All of the recipes that I have in my possession are now on the site.
http://www.mountaincable.net/~pcharles/tgss/tgss.html I would appreciate receiving more recipes, histories, tying instructions, interesting stories about the fly, or any other pertinent thing you might wish to add to your fly's page. I'll start boxing and labeling tonight, they should be out by the beginning of the week. Thanks swappers, for all of your good work. That's a nice collection of flies. BTW, who's the guy in the Old Man sweater? ![]() -- TL, Tim http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

When using tube flies take along a bobbin threader to assist in getting
tippet thru the tube. Also, the best knot I have found for the hook is the Palomar Knot, it gives it a bit bulk and the hook holds better in the keeper. Also, I have found, with experience, that less is more on the dressing. At first, I tied them with LOTS of stuff. I go a bit sparse and I have seen better results (easier to cast as well). Oh yeah, fish the fly with the hook up and reduce hangups. Chris PS I caught and released 16 shad today (I had suprisingly few long distance releases today, I credit the offset octopus hook) using this tube fly pattern tied with red over white wings on an 8 weight and a fast sinking tip line. One guy, near me, caught about the same maybe a few more on spinning gear; so I felt pretty good. He tried to get me to give him my Shad instead of releasing them. "Them damn good Sturgeon bait!" |

... Is that head cement in the big brown bottle with the pourer in it? Probably not, but I bet it's contents did have an effect on his head. Just one look at that grin and one has to wonder how many of those bottles are laying empty on the floor, unseen in the photo. |

I've seen it often enough to tell me that fly has something special. Sort of like a Hare's Ear nymph - nothing fancy but a great fly. (I'm sure the other flies are great too, but I haven't seen them in action.) Willi |

A guide working in a fly shop in Mammoth Lakes sold me three of them a few years ago after I told him that I intended to go to particular Sierra lake the next day. He "guaranteed" that I would catch a bunch of good sized fish with it if I fished the inlets of the lake with that fly. For once, the supposed "magic fly" actually delivered as promised. I had the most productive day of trout fishing that I have ever had. Since then, I have tried in in a bunch of locales and have been at least fairly successful in most. I like to try it when there's nothing happening on top and nymphing hasn't been fruitful, or when there's a deep pool that needs a dredging fly pulled through it. Willi's right. Its not fancy, but it seems to work. Danl |
