CARP..your 1st double

HOW LONG did it take to get your first DOUBLE carp?? I've been fishing now,
with my old man, for 3 spring/summers..(not into the cold)..i've been to
about 10 different day ticket waters, and i'm still waiting for my
'double'..i've had a 9lb5oz, 3 eights and about 5 sevens, but this summer
i'm gonna get it..It would help if I had transport, as I have to rely on my
dad feeling well enough to go, and the weather has to be warm...I'd fish in
a snowstorm...

I never really started of carp fishing, I just preferred the old method of
catching the tiddlers using a float
just to get me out the house,
until one day I was walking round the reservoir where I was fishing, noticed
a carp feeding just feet away
from the bank so on went a lump of sweetcorn and in with the float! no
sooner had I pulled the bait to within inches of
the nose of the carp had it sucked it in, and away it went, and on three
pound line! ( NOT one of my best ideas! )
it took about half an hour to get it to the bank, all 11lb 2oz of it! from
then on I was hooked, so I went straight
down the local tackle shop and bought my self a carp outfit! although when I
go fishing I don't predominantly fish for carp
I usually use a float rod to stop me getting bored and just set up the carp
rod in a nice looking area and turn on the
bite alarm and leave it to do it's magic! One thing I have noticed though is
that just before I've caught a carp, I have ALWAYS
caught a nice sized rudd on the float just before it! can't explain it, it's
always happened that way!
I only really caught my first carp on my first session for them, didn't
really bother for them before that! have been fishing for about 18 years
though. and caught this carp on about year 5.

If you persevere and fish the right waters, with the right baits, in the
right locations, then it is only a matter of time.

Monitor what works on a lake, and what doesn't. Trial and error. Change
things constantly, but be patient with each change.

Are doubles regularly coming out of the lakes you are fishing?

I was fishing today 10am to 4.30pm on a dayticket water, and I was watching
a guy a few pegs down from me fish. He was an excellent fisherman, his cast
was spot on every time, and he was concentrating very hard on catching a
fish. Yet, I was asleep most of the time (until being rudely awoken by the
bite alarm), and I banged out quite a few Carp, including double's and he
didn't!

What did he do wrong?

The answer is, he did nothing wrong, in fact he fished the swim as I would
have. But maybe it was something as simple as he was using a different
bait. Not the wrong bait, but a different bait.

What did I do right?

Firstly, I was lucky. Secondly, I have fished the lake before, and through
experimentation, I have found what works and what doesn't. But, even today,
in the morning I tried something different, and it didn't work. I blanked
the morning session and others were catching. So, I changed baits and
techniques, and it worked. The next time, I will try something new or
different again, but I have no idea if it will work or not yet. After a
while you build up a picture what works on a particular lake and swim. The
more you try, the more you learn.

As for choosing the size of your fish, then I don't think that is possible.
60Lb Carp will take a 15mm boilie, and so will a 3Lb Carp. But, if there is
not a 60Lb Carp in the lake, then you can do what you want, you won't catch
it.

In my local pond - free fishing I hesitate to add I bagged 2 13lb carp. Not
off the bottom with the traditional bait such as boilie or corn etc, but off
the top.

Floating bread did the trick, just in front of reeds. 2 within 5 minutes of
each other - (pics available upon request)

Point is, it is still relatively cold and the water temp is warming up but
the fish are now moving and looking for food. So, you don't always have to
fish long tactics on the bottom. Try it, it could work for you as well

It was two years before i got my first double, but after that they
seem to get more frequent.
What methods are you using?
The old ways of launching a big bait and weight to the middle of the
lake aren't always the best - carp have learned fast that this is a
danger zone and so do their dining elsewhere - try in the margins near
some weeds and bullrushes, I have caught many double figure carp in
less than 18 inches of water.
Surface fishing is always good in summer and the best baits for this
are chum mixer (held on with bait bands), bread (brown bread is
better), dried cat food and any type of floating pellets.....you may
need a controller float to cast them any distance but I dont bother
with that, I prefer to fish them close in.

Surface fishing is wicked, but do it on a water without any water birds
around, especially ducks. It will be impossible unless you can draw the
Carp in really close.

And don't be afraid to chuck out quite a few free offerings to get the Carp
feeding confidently.

not really, if you use a zig rig you can just crank the reel a few
times to sink the bait out of view of the dreaded feathered menaces.

After many trial and error sessions, I can honestly say that 'crazy
bait' expanding pellets are by far the best at getting the carp up to
the top....they are also only very small and don't fill them up, so a
chum biscuit or lump of bread is a welcome mouthful in comparrison to
the tiny xpanders.

Funnily enough, that's how I caught my 9lb 'er..off the top, using scopex
floaters, at Moon Lake, Tattershall....great fun!!, wish i'd took more time
landin' it now...as usual!!
