Upper Wisconsin river float

As mentioned a while ago, several of us are going to float a section
of the Wisconsin river downstream from the town of Eagle River this
month. The date has been fixed....Saturday, August 14.

Eagle River is at the eastern end of a large resort area. There are
all kinds of accommodations available for anyone who intends to drive
up on Friday. In the unlikely event that a room can't be found in
Eagle river, Minocqua, St. Germain, Woodruff and Rhinelander are all
within about a half hour's drive.

So far, George, Joel, me, and my friend Jay are planning to attend for
sure. Becky may also be joining us. Becky, Jay, and I all have our
own kayaks. George has a canoe. I'm not sure yet whether he will be
able to accommodate someone else in the canoe. George?

If Becky decides not to join us, I'll have a spare kayak. Anyone else
who decides to come along will have to provide his or her own craft
unless I get notification within the next week. I can arrange to have
one more canoe if needed. Presumably, rentals are available in the
area, but I don't know anything about them. If anyone expresses
interest, I'll try to find out.

The plan is to float the section of the Wisconsin that parallels
(roughly) Wisconsin state Hwy. 70 from just outside Eagle River, more
or less to St. Germain. I've never fished this water myself nor heard
anyone else speak of it, but it looks promising for smallmouth and, at
the very least, should make an interesting and enjoyable float for the
better part of a day. There are broad slow stretches at either end,
and some very nice riffles where the highway is closest to the river.
There are a number of likely spots to put in and take out so the
length of the trip can easily be adjusted.

All that remains is to agree on a time and place to meet. There are
several possibilities in Eagle River. I can't recall the names of any
of the restaurants or cafes (aside from MacDonald's) in town offhand,
but will look them up unless someone has a specific selection in mind.

I can't really help you with a meeting place. Eagle River is a bit
touristy most of the year to put up with the likes of me (and vicey
versa). But the logical put in is below the Otter Rapids dam.Here is
an aerial photo that shows the dam just west of town. Just keep
clicking the arrows on the left to see the route.

I also have an excellent paddling guide (Paddling Northern Wisconsin)
that describes the route and gives numbers to call for water levels
(715-848-2976) and canoe/kayak outfitting (Hawk's Nest Outfitters, 2
miles down from the dam. 715-479-7944).

Right now it looks like it will only be me. Jacci has to work and Sam
is doing daily doubles football practice. If I can find a canoe
partner I'll let you all know. If not maybe I'll call Hawks Nest and
see how much they'd charge to rent a kayak.

Yep, that's the spot I was looking at. There are several likely looking
takeouts at around 5 to 5.5 miles downstream. One of them is the last place
at which the river comes up to meet the highway. The others are distributed
along the next mile or so of river. We should be able to find any number of
decent options. For reference, I believe we did roughly the same distance
on the Penns float back in May. This turned out to be about a five hour
trip with a generous stop for shore lunch and numerous stops to fish.
