No secret here. Olive or gray Hare's Ear Plus (Antron/Hare's Ear)
wrapped over a #12-#16 scud or wet fly hook. A few wraps of lead wire
for weight under that and a shellback of poly bag material ribbed with
either extra fine copper wire or brown tying thread pulled over the
top. I also tie a pink version with ribbing of flourescent pink tying
thread. I use a piece of velcro to fuzz up the body.

Chris, that pattern is pretty much all I use on the Crooked, which as
you probably know is a big scud factory. Orange is a good color too.

This is the look:

You'll see some patterns with little tails and antennae, like here

http://www.westfly.com/patterns/wet/scud.shtml

but I've never found that these make the pattern more effective.

BTW, don't waste any money on the shellback materials you see in fly
shops; little strips cut from plastic sandwich bags work just fine.

The shellback material you get from flyshops is nicer to work with than
plastic sandwich bags as it is elastic and can be stretched to give a
more arthropodous or chitinous segmented look. However, you can buy it a
fabric shops for considerably less.

Well, yeah, if I want to strive for effects I can't spell or pronounce.

More to the point, I haven't found that a more arthritic and cretinous
look catches more fish.....

I haven't fished enough scuds to know but my favorite is the Oliver
Edwards' version found in his book Fly Tyers Master Class.

I have my books, but I suspect there is a 'special' guide pattern out
there that is a killer color, material, or colored bead or something
spectacular?

Thanks in advance, Chris
