Hi,
Been lurking out here in the shadows for a short while reading posts but wanted to find out if there's any people in here in northern Maryland that fly fish? I'm sure there are but, seems most on these list servers seem to be geared for waters out west of the Mississippi. Sucks that i'm just getting into fly fishing here in Maryland since I just moved back here from Falcon, Colorado in late '01. Seems all the blue ribbon fishing waters are out there and i'm not! Nevertheless, i'm going to make the best of it and try to find some good spots out here to get my heels wet. First off, any suggestions on what flies to begin learning how to tie here in Carrol/Frederick Counties. Not educated on any of the hatches of local streams here but would like to learn, what to stock my box(es) up with. I'm sure the wooly buggers are a must have but, wet? dry...? Was reading in FR&R that wool style fly's are pretty easy, forgiving and cheap for the aspiring newbie. Second, I can drive an hour or so in any direction to get to some prime fishing but don't know of much other than, I believe it's called Beaver Creek, just off of Rt 66 between Frederick and Hagerstown. And there's a catch and release south of me on Rt 94 (Patuxent or Patapsco?). Not limited to Trout either...Bass...whatever... Sorry for the Novel....thanks in advance... Anthony Mt Airy, MD |

They may do some fishing west of the Mississippi, but those boys are SERIOUSLY lacking in camaraderie. ;-) There are several fine upstanding young MD roffians that should be with you shortly. You've got a buch of "blue ribbon" waters within driving distance. You may want to pick this up: http://tinyurl.com/5tj2u -- TL, Tim ------------------------ http://css.sbcma.com/timj |

Anthony Mt Airy, MD I wasn't aware that Maryland was large enough to have a North designation, having lived there in the mid '60s; however, be that as it may, I imagine Mr. Frank--the patron saint of the drowning man--Reid will be along shortly to help ya out. We gotta Mt. Airy down in NC too. Have y'all got a Mayberry? Mark |

Anthony That's ok, as we, in the ONS, don't have one either :~^( I don't know why Mr. Reid hasn't shown up yet, though it could be that it is more difficult to fall *in*when the streams have frozen over, than it is when the streams are flowing. Mr. Reid is our resident Maryland streams expert, so it will be imperative that you speak with him. Welcome to ROFF! Your life is now and forever to be changed. Mark |

Still no Frank?!?!?!? Must be outta town (hope he brought his life
preserver). I live in northern Maryland (Harford County/Bel Air) and flyfish a bunch. For trout, the Gunpowder (which I call home waters) is a good tailwater. Catch and release below Prettyboy resevoir dam for 7 or so miles in northern Baltimore county (Map destination: Monkton, MD). I think that is roughly an hour north-east of you. Not too diverse insect-wise, but has a nice sulfur hatch starting mid-June or so. GRHE, copper johns, PT, green weenies seem to work subsurface. For dries, sulfur imitations during the hatch work well, but EHC in tan and gray are my favorites. There are BWO and Trico hatches, and I have stumbled onto a few with very little success, so any pattern . Terrestrials starting late June through the summer are also lots of fun: Crowe Beetle, Foam beetle, Madam-X work for me. Last summer's 17 year Cicada hatch was friggen incredible, can't wait for 2021! The patterns I mentioned are all pretty easy ties and work in most places. There are also smallmouth bass in many places, and they are a blast on a fly rod. Springtime also brings large striped bass into the Chesapeake Bay, also fun. Roughly 2 hours to your west is Garrett county and 4 more fine rivers: Savage, Yough, Casselman and the North Branch of the Potomac. But that's another story. Have you seen the DNR fishing site? http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/ There is some good info there, and elsewhere on the web. (Jonesin' for some fishin', February blows)\ Sam |

![]() There's a fantastic, growing, unexploited new fishery opening up in Maryland. For now, the fish are confined to a few tributaries of the Potomac, in particular, Little Hunting Creek, Dogue Creek, Pohick Bay, Mason Neck Bay, Kanes Creek, Marshall Hall, Pomonkey Creek, and Mattawoman Creek -- but they will soon become widespread throughout the Potomac drainage. I am, of course, referring to the legendary Asian snakehead. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |
