Mystery Fly followup

I found this fly in the Umpqua 2001 catalog of flies. It is the possie
fly and is made with Australian opposum fur. Looks identical to the
mystery fur fly.

There is no such beastie as the Australian Opossum, Don.
(Bloody Umpqua ... ;-)

It's probably Brushtail possum body fur especially in NZ where the
brushtail is an introduced pest/vermin.

In New Zealand (was there last month) the locals blame the demise
of many flightless NZ birds on:
a) stoats (weasels) who kill and eat the birds
b) and on what they refer to as 'Australian Opposums' that
'eat the bird eggs' Kiwis wish they could be renamed as
"squashems"

Actually Steve, the NZ possum is imported from Australia. None of the
Marsupials are native to NZ. I have a couple pairs of socks made from this
stuff, and I'm on the verge of retiring them to the fly tying table. They're
overly fuzzy with some stiff hails, perfect for stonefly nymphs.

Well, it's a common mistake ... one of those common usage things.

They're a real problem apparently, didn't know they ate bird eggs, though.
They are known here for their garden destruction and midnight
rambunctious ramblings over the rooftops.

I don't know about socks, but if you have anything made out of
polypropylene fleece, when you wash it, the lint that collects
in the dryer screen makes pretty good dubbing.

Next weekend, the 7th and 8th of May, is the big wool and sheep festival
here is Maryland. I'm gonna stock up on the newest Angelina fibre colors
and then alpaca lunch, buy some great llamanade and just wool away the hours
hoofing it around the place.
