Peter, I took the same south Bend and shortened it to about a 7 or 7 /12
footer.

Just lopped of the butt and reattached the grip and reel seat. It came out
great, cast about a four weight line and I gave away to some kid whose
mother's pants I never got into...

....wish I had the rod back....

That's always a chancey thing....rod tapers are calculated for a
specific length and weight, and once you chop away from it, you
basically get whatever you get. I build my own rods from scratch, so I
don't feel like monkeying with store bought ones anymore. Let the next
guy practice on this one, or fish it as is!
