I suggest looking for light weight if you're planning to pack your float
tube in the backcountry. The "V" shaped boats are the best design, IMO,
but with one exception: if you're using the tube to assist in wading
over mud and weeds the donut shaped tubes are better.

I have a Wood River V-tube I really like, but I think I read here on
ROFF that they've gone out of business. Buck's Bags also makes high
quality tubes and pontoon boats.

I've had a Buck's Bag for about 7 years now. Very happy with it. Fewer
gadgets and features than comparably priced models fom other companies but
they put their money into quality of the components.

I prefer the Fish Cat by Outcast. It sells for about $150, has a lot of
floatation, and you sit above the water. Lot warmer when it is cold.

I'll second that

Lot warmer when it is hot, too.

I've done a lot of float tubing, in many different places, and I've
never come close to being too hot. You can always forget about the
waders if you're float tubing in a bathtub, I suppose, but don't forget
your rubber duckie.

I haven't used the Outcast but I prefer a tube that sits lower in the
water for two unrelated reasons. High profile tends to get pushed around
in the wind. When tubing w/o waders in a high floating model, your thighs
get sunburned.

And thus, once again, you excite the admiration and envy of the entire
civilized world.

I don't have a rubber duckie. It never occurred to me that I need one.
What purpose does it serve?

Wolfgang
