It's my understanding that most bugs are a bit late this season, wet spring and all. With that said, chasing the Salmon fly hatch is not my idea of fun. I no longer run about trying to find the hatch. It's been my experience that the words ..."You should have been here yesterday" came from this emergence. Don't get me wrong, when the fish are on these things it's mayhem, but I have fished this section of the Madison for over twenty years and have "hit it" twice and then for only a few hours. I'd have some patterns for the hatch anyway but I really don't think one needs to chase after it. If you are on the water and the flies are coming off, so much the better. Fish still eat other bugs :-) I would not be without a few of the patterns for both the Golden and the Salmon or Willow Fly. In general, the Golden's appear after the Giant Stones. If you fish the Madison "high up", Windy Point to Hebgan the hatch is weak at best. They are around, but not in the mystic numbers one reads about. Floating the mid section of the river is the best avenue to encountering these bugs, and yes, 4x is not a bad idea maybe three if the wind is blowing more than usual. Here are a few patterns; http://www.troutflies.com/go.mvc?ID=D1128 http://www.troutflies.com/go.mvc?ID=D1037 http://www.troutflies.com/go.mvc?ID=D1098 http://www.troutflies.com/go.mvc?ID=h1023 http://www.troutflies.com/go.mvc?ID=D1061 the last one warren says is his pick... at this time I'm out them but I should have a few tommorow HM P.S. when you fish these fllies, both dries and nymphs, wear eye protection...they are big and heavy and move all over in the wind. |

It also helps to twitch them (the dries) around on the surface. Watch the naturals -- they're twitching like crazy. good point rw... this is one of the few times outside of hoppers that a delicate presentation is not required in fact a resounding "plop" is preferred and the adults do skitter all over the surface. If they are on, you will see some huge fish and I mean 6 to 9+ pound browns. In the Madison current this is equal to a chrome Steelhead in the 10# plus range in less "heavy" water... 4x will seem thread like :-) |

Last year, we caught just the tail-end of the salmon fly hatch at the western clave. AIR, IIRC, AFAIK, and IYCFTOTKMY, the fish weren't interested in much else when the big bugs were on the water. Luckily for me, Willi had tied up some monstrous, sparrow-sized flies to match the naturals. If you're reading, Willi, and you don't mind, you might post the recipe on ROFFT. Failing that, and supposing the salmon flies are there this year, what are the recommended flies for these bugs? Danl I thought I posted this earlier, but I guess not..... I talked to Warren the other night and he's pretty sure we'll hit it better this year. The Madison is still raging and the Salmonflies are late. Here's the basic recipe. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flyt...51500fotw.html I tie it alittle different. I color it at step 8 I use a thinner foam for the wing. I use some very thin foam that was wrapped around a stereo receiver I bought. I used heavier foam last year and it twisted alot while casting, I think the thinner foam will work better. I use different thinner rubber strand for more action. Pix are up on ABPF. Willi |

"Willi" wrote in message ... The Salmonflies are HUGE. They make the big Eastern Mayflies look like midges. They look like little birds skimming across the water when they're swimming toward shore. Obviously they bring big fish to the surface. Hopefully we'll get at least part of the hatch. "We"? Hopefully that means you've decided to come on up for at least part of the clave. Danl And bring some of those big salmon fly patterns...... Think it will probably happen. I was hoping to hitch a ride with Bruce but he's coming up through Salt Lake. I tied up about a dozen.
