King Cobra Lures specializes in making jigs to exact customer specifications
if you know what you want. Simon isn't on-line yet, but he did ask me about
helping him go on-line the last time I saw him. If you know what you want I
can get you in touch with him.

Good detective work, Ted... finding the answer to your own question that
way. I tried several search engines and didn't locate that resource.

And what a wonderful coincidence -- you and Dandy Baits both being in Reno.
That way, you can order customized baits, swing by the south side of town,
pick them up in person, and save yourself several days and shipping costs.
;-)

Seriously, when I saw the question a few days ago, I was waiting for the
other shoe to drop. I have a hunch you might have been involved in their
Website design, and you've done us the favor of introducing us to Dandy
Baits' custom-design service.

I think Dandy Baits is heading in the right direction. Customizing
spinnerbaits is the hottest trend today. On an AOL member site
(http://hometown.aol.com/bassin303/week7.html), I read a statement
attributed to Alton Jones: "Alton Jones figured, conservatively, that to
accommodate some of the variables in the average bait shop, 125,000
spinnerbaits would need to be purchased. Also, because you would want at
least one replacement for each one, 250,000 spinnerbaits would be needed."

I doubt Jones was implying that anyone needs to carry that many baits... but
his remark does make one think. Why are there so many spinnerbait
combinations available? The reason is that there are so many variables when
it comes to fishing situations.

Successful spinnerbait anglers recognize the variables (local baitfish,
light, water temp, depth, murkiness, wind, current, air pressure, fishing
pressure and boat traffic, vegetation, cover, structure, etc.) and attempt
to identify the perfect bait for each situation (selecting the optimum blade
size, number, and shape; bait size, color, and weight; skirt color and
pattern). Usually, they narrow down their search and settle for the closest
match in their tackle box and then experiment with retrieve speed, depth,
and method. If they were to have a way to customize their spinnerbaits, they
increase their odds of tossing the perfect bait for the conditions they plan
to fish. And the closer to the actual fishing situation that customization
takes place, the better able they are to create the bait they need.
Terminator's sales of replaceable skirts is based on that premise. So are
the various systems that allow blades to be clipped onto wire frames or
behind swivels.

If you're serious about customizing, let me pass on a point from the
spinnerbaitmeister himself, Bob Rickard: Spinnerbaits are essentially blade
baits, and therefore blades are the most important variables. If the fish
tell you it's time to make a change, start by switching out your blades. Go
from a tandem to a single-blade configuration. Choose a different size
and/or shape. Change color or finish. For example, try a painted blade in
clear water when the sun comes out, or go with a hammered blade that
scatters the light. When the water you're fishing becomes murky, switch from
a nickel blade to a gold or copper one, and increase the vibration in muddy
and low-light conditions.

According to the same AOL member site, Kevin Van Dam shares that opinion:
"...the most important factor is the blade. When the fish don't want your
bait, the first thing you should change is the blade size/color/shape, not
the skirt."
