Default old dog(trainer) learns new trick

I tie a Lot of Sparkle Duns and some other ties that require precise
handling of small amounts of deer hair ( I use SD's down to 22s ) THE
most important thing in producing good Sparkle Duns/ Compara Duns is getting
good hair, suitable for the purpose and very fine dubbing (try X-Dub from
Blue Ribbon Flies, best I've found ... no connection and all other normal
disclaimers ) i.e. good materials make a huge difference.

The second most important thing is cutting the correct amount of hair off
the hide, for the size hook you are using. Thus, the new ( to me ) trick.
Cut the hide up into narrow strips maybe 1/4 inch wide and work from these
strips .... it is much, Much, MUCH easier to get the right amount this way
as opposed to off a piece several inches square

Have you experimented with using something other than hair for those
small SDs?

I've tried Needloft brand plastic canvas yarn, which seems to work
pretty well. I get it at Walmart.

Yes, I sometimes use CDC. I enjoy tying a few with the deer hair because
it's 'original pattern' I had Craig Mathews pick me out a piece of hair
for tiny SDs ... makes a really big difference to have the right piece, and
he went through the entire bin of "Sparkle Dun" hair describing what HE saw
as differences, it was an education.
