I moved here in the late 70's. Back then Oakdale had one traffic light,
zero year round Honker population, and it was very rare to see a fly rod on
my 'home water.'

Each year the local phone book has had a cover photo taken locally and
reflecting the area. Traditionally this is dairy and ranch country and most
of those photos contained cows, horses with cows, cowboys or pastoral
landscapes with cows. Thus I found the new one I just got significant and
a little amusing. We now have 10 traffic lights, around 3000 year round
geese here, and lots of fly fishers. Ah, well, at least I like the geese.

My 'home water' about 7 miles from my door, as it appears on the new
phonebook. Fly fishers have become as common as cows :-((

Stanislaus .... and I assume the postage paid deal is for the company that
produces the book ... "Central California Directories" ... they probably do
lots of directories through out the mid-state ...

Have thought of a trip to the Stanislaus. Have not fished there for at
least 50 years. With my uncle who farmed in Turlock. How deep is the
river in the fishing areas. Need my canoe, or my Jetcraft?

The Stanislaus, of course, runs for many miles from the crest of the Sierra
near Sonora pass to the Delta. It is very different in different reaches.
Near my home in Oakdale is the lower limit of 'trout' water and right now
the lower river is closed to fishing to protect the Salmon ... it opens
again Jan 1st. When it is open it is dam controlled and the water levels
vary with irrigation and other factors ....
