Default Opinions on recent multi-tips...?

Hey all,

For that all-purpose 8-weight set-up I mentioned earlier, now I gotta
figure out appropriate fly line(s). Again, I plan on using this for
'everything bigger than a trout.' This could mean, alternately - in
freshwater, Salmon, Steelhead, or even Bass; in sal****er, it'd be
Stripers out at Montauk, Bluefish, small Barracuda, maybe even baby
tarpon, or whatever else I might find when I head out to the dock or
beach or rocks or flats when I'm in some tropical place on a nominally
non-fishing vacation with my girlfriend.

I was thinking I'd get one sinking line (not sure what size) and one
floating line. I've already got an extra spool, so the extra line
wouldn't be a problem. But now I'm wondering about the multitip lines.

I read in older posts that they didn't cast very well, with hinging and
getting caught in the guides, but it sounds like maybe those problems
have been fixed in more recent lines? Opinions...?

Thanks, Tim

PS - and if you do think multi tips are the way to go, any particular
brands you like?

I use an SA Multi tip 7 wt line and have not had any problems casting than I
would have casting a normal floating line.

Another alternative would be a floating line and the airflo polyleader
system.

Depends on what you're fishing for them with...I've caught several around 5
pounds handily enough with a 5-weight, but that was casting Zonkers, Wooly
Buggers and Muddlers and sizes 6-12. When I start fishing bugs from the
heavy box (1/0 deer-hair mice and such) my comfort-level begins with a
7-weight and goes up a weight or two as the wind kicks up. A lighter rod
would handle the fish just as well, but it wouldn't effectively handle the
fly it takes to get us connected in the first place. If 2-pound bass are
looking for food in 1/0 and better sizes, there definitely is a reason to go
after them with an 8-weight. You can't catch them on something that won't
effectively cast what they're feeding on.

Mu, I must be a better caster than I thought, because I regularly fish
leaders in the 120" range : -)

Oops. You know, most guys typically tend to overestimate figures when it
comes to, ahem ... "length" as it were.

I'm gonna go measure my polyleader now.

Thanks for the replies. Anyone else have any experience, pros or cons,
casting with particular brands of multi tips?
