PowerPro vs. Stren Super Braid

I have been using Powerpro on most of my reels, but since I have heard
some good things about Stren Super Braid, I bought a box to try out. I
spooled it up and forgot about it because I hadn't had a chance to get
out due to work. Thursday I finally went out to hook a few. Tied on a
large spinnerbait, caught a couple, went to cast a little further this
time, SNAP! Spinner flew even further than intended, cause it wasn't
attached to my line anymore. I figured that I should have retied
anyway, tied on a new bait, and SNAP! This time I was getting angry. I
decided maybe I had scraped against something underwater, and removed
10 or 15 feet of line. Tied on another lure, went to cast, and SNAP!
Stopped and thought about something besides that next fish, and
realized that this wasn't my old faithful PowerPro, but it was the reel
I spooled with Stren. I had only brought one other rod with me, so I
continued to use it some, but I was very careful not to try to get full
distance out of each cast. I caught some nice fish with it, including a
5 lb'er without any more breakoffs. I guess it just can't stand that
quick jerk on a long cast attempt. Did I get a bad spool, or is all the
Stren Super like this? I think I'm going to TOSS the Stren and CAST
with PowerPro.

Like you, I too have heard good things about Stren SuperBraid, but I still
haven't tried it. I kind of figure "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I
think that it's very likly that you got a bad spool. I'd contact Stren and
talk to them. What pound test were you using?

14 lb. test. There's no way I was putting enough whip on the rod to
cause that.
While we are on the subject of PowerPro, let me share that they have
had some counterfeit PP show up in Thailand. Beware of "too good to be
true" prices.

I have experienced a bind and snap particularly with heavy baits like
spinner baits and rattle traps. Note that I have also experienced this with
Power Pro and flouro carbon. I don't think its the line so much as some
kind of binding paired with a line with no stretch. The other thing I have
noticed is that a trilene knot seems to be much more durable for me with
super braids than a palomar knot. The lightest Stren I have used is 20lb
so I don't know if there is any weaknesses with the lighter lines. I have
noticed some line sizes have issue in other brands. For instances 10lb
Seaguar Carbon Pro seems to be a little lighter than rated while their 12 lb
will pull my boat around in circles without breaking.

spiderwire stealth. while giving you a great tough line with no
streatch i have only once found it to break(and that is when i got it
hung on a bridge girter, and i pulled a 17.5" fiberglass bass boat to
the bridge before it finaly broke!) this is some tough stuff, and it
won't gouge your rod gides like some other super braids.

I've been fishing superbraids since they were first introduced and I have
never experienced guide grooving on any of my rods. I suppose on some
really inexpensive rods with poor quality guides it might occur, but I've
yet to see it.

I forgot to mention that i use 20# test since the diamiter of
superbraids is much smaller than that of a tratitional mono you can
afford to have a line with a much higher test with out sacrificing line
invisibility, and with the super braids you can easily color your line
with a felt tip marker.

the original spider wire has been known to gouge the ceramic rod guids.
i had an ugly stick that i had to replace the tip on for this reason(i
know the ugly stick is not a very high end rod, but it is not cheap
eather.)

I've gotta disagree with you there Josh. Regardless of what type of
braid/superline you're using you are always sacrificing line visability when
compared to a similar diameter mono/fleuro line. There is nothing invisable
about those superlines.

And I still say that a creature who's brain isn't even developed enough to
have pain receptors isn't going to say "Hmmm, there's a line ahead of that
lure, I think I'll avoid it."

I've fished extremely clear water not using a mono or flourocarbon leader
with great success. By the same token, I've had Gil fishing behind me using
PowerPro and no leader, while I was fishing Yo-Zuri hybrid and he caught as
many, possibly more smallmouth than I did. And we were sight fishing in
extremely clear water.
