Ahh, but if you are at Canyonlands, its only a hop and skip down to
Mexican Hat and Monument Valley, maybe with a side trip to Canyon de
Chelly. Then, of course, the Grand Canyon (North Rim) is just down the
pike a way....which puts you just within arms length of Kodachrome
Basin and Bryce Canyon. Then, only a small detour puts you within a
day's journey of Yosemite, then on up the Pacific Crest to see the
Redwoods....and then its just a small trip to Mt St Helens....then the
Columbia River Gorge...Craters of the Moon....down into the Clave from
the north....

Yep, a month or so might be just about right.

Myron,

I two fishing trips rather than one.

Boss, here is what I would do.

The exception being that if five guys wanted to pick you up in my van in New
York and motor across the country, I would fly into Bozeman and rent the
littlest car I could to save on gas. Without a lot of planning and days
spent adjusting your schedule that would be the easiest. I think mine was
$300 US for nine days last year.

From Bozeman it is a short drive (one and a half hours) to clave central, a
campground in the forest. You may be more inclined to stay at one of the
many inns in the area (the fellows here would make sure you had a room)
where you will see a few of the scruffy, well, er, folks, not to mention
those that camp nearby and migrate in and out according to their mood.

From this central location, just pick a direction and drive for an hour or
two. You can not go wrong, it's beautiful.

Then I would make sure that I hooked up with Lou for a day or two (or me if
I am there as Lou took me last year) for sightseeing and fishing in the
park...Yellowstone.

In this way, You would get to know Montana.

Granted, you would miss a lot of other sights, but you would be bending your
neck so often and looking out the car window at the sights that you wouldn't
have time to stop and enjoy yourself.

I most highly recommend that you spend a day with Warren, on his boat. I
will hereby state that I think we all ought to pitch in just a wee bet and
help Warren host Roger.

Warren put s a lot of work and effort into those claves and I think we
should treat him and Roger to a good day on the river.

Blueberry pancakes at the campground, steak and wine at the Grizzly Inn...

What say you?

Warren told me he isn't clavemastering the Montana deal this year, so
it's open for anyone to organize. Someone needs to step in and fill the
void so folks who are traveling a distance can begin planning and making
reservations and...well, you know.

And don't forget Zion - you'd be almost there. g I'm going to do a southwest
swing in May/June and Yellowstone/Grand Teton in September this year - and maybe
some more in between depending on gas prices.

Some of the Penn's Clave folks show up at the Yellowstone Clave, you
know. A few thousand miles difference is nothing to a fisherman.

Jeff, I hope Rachel and my wife Daribel get to meet someday soon. I most
definitely want to take Daribel to the West. Offhand, I don't really think
there needs to be a clavemeister (they are handy tho') other than someone to
pick the dates. I know from my single trip of enough places to fish that I
could put someone on water with no problem, I mean the place is loaded with
streams. Actually, one could fish for a week and never leave the Madison.
Fly recommendations would have to come from the local shop.

I've got a decent map or two and maps are easy enough to find. Last year was
roughly July 10-16. I haven't seen on the website that the Side Inn has
raised it's prices...(http://www.slideinn.com)

A little scouting shows that there are many places on the Madison, within a
very few miles of the Slide Inn that have some very decent cabins at very
competitive prices.

My plan is to bring the wife, Daribel and our fifteen year old daughter
(yeah, that's scary but not as bad as leaving her home alone!) and make a
family trip out of it. So I'll take the family around for a day or two, the
wife and I will fish for a day or two while Monica stays at camp, and the
wife and Monica will be on their own with the rental car for a day or two.

At least, that's my plan thus far. Start throwing out ideas boys...

The first idea that comes to mind is to increase your insurance on the
rental car, and put a max limit on your credit card.

Aside from Wayne Knight's request to overlap with grouse season (2005 season
opened on 9-15) no preferences were stated, so it's Saturday, the 16th
through Saturday, the 23rd. These dates are now graven in
stone......erasures are a bitch.

Marquette is the biggest city in the U.P.......the best bet for regularly
scheduled air passenger service. It also happens to be as close to the
center (east to west) as one can get and still hope to find amenities like
food and electricity. There are lots of possibilities for accommodations
ranging from camping in near wilderness to cabins and hotels. Trout streams
within reasonable driving distance are too numerous to list, so Marquette it
is.

Northwest Airlines is currently listing a flight from Raleigh with one short
stop in Detroit for $323 (including all taxes and other mumbo-jumbo). For
an extra three bucks you can get a flight with TWO! stops. DeLorme says
Raleigh to Marquette is 1164.52 miles and takes 21 hours and 57 minutes to
drive......but they tend to be conservative. Assuming the original list of
committed attendees remains firm, it's highly likely that one could make
arrangements to fly to some more civilized place and hitch a ride.

I'll post an email to the usual suspects sometime later this week.....see
who's still interested.....and then get busy choosing and booking a clave
central based on the results.

Wolfgang
