Default MONTANA 2006 - PING ROGER and RIVERMAN

Roger/Myron - the western gathering is a bit less organized this year,
allowing some flexibility in dates. in order to maximize the
opportunity for your friends on this group to meet you, enjoy your
company, and show you some of their favorite western locations, will the
week of July 8 around western yellowstone/hebgen lake work for you?
Warren claims he won't be spearheading/organizing the event this year
(according to him, anyway), but there are enough folks familiar with
that area to give you a good sampling of montana, yellowstone, and idaho
- all within easy driving distances. i suspect dates can be adjusted to
best fit your needs and travel schedule. But, reservations need to be
made soon.

Jeff,

That date sounds OK for me. I will plan to go to the US to do some
flyfishing this summer. I guess I would have to look at my finances and
see whether I can do both Montana and Penns, otherwise I think that I
will try for Montana (after all, even Tom L. thought that would be the
wisest choice.).
How soon would I have to reserve a room and where? Could I have someone
help me with this? I also need to know costs and other things like
where to fly and if someone might be able to give me a lift from that
airport.
It's a bit difficult for me to plan all, since I'm not at home but in
Japan, but I will work on it.

/Roger

Roger,

Here's where the smart folks stay: http://www.slideinn.com/

Many of us have camped right up the road at the Cabin Creek campground,
which is between Hebgen and Quake lakes.

Hope to see you there.

Would a motor home be a viable option?

Yes, they are expensive though. For the money, you'd be better off to stay
at a lodge, you'll have no shortage of vehicles and taxis...

However, if you were to decide to use the capabilities of the motor home,
that would extend your reach by miles and miles of Montana. Many rivers have
pull offs/parking/camp where you park/ type of access.

OK then... i guess everyone should plan on July 8-15 for the weeklong
get together in Montana on the Madison (west of West Yellowstone and
Hebgen Lake). I suggest making reservations as early as possible. The
Slide Inn requires a 50% deposit, which is refundable up to 30 days in
advance of the reservation date. It has cooking and non-cooking
cabins... nightly rates range from $80 for a single or couple (as in one
bed couple), $90 for to noncooking double, and 100 for cooking/double.
All are non-smoking, no pets. There are several other places in the
area, but it all fills up fast. I know warren and some others have
extra tents or camping stuff, and camping is around $11-15 a night as I
recall. Yellowstone has some decent "cabins" with double beds in all of
its major hotel areas, and the cost is very reasonable. Those are
booked through some agent - Xterra, I think...but you can find info by
googling Yellowstone lodging.

So, I guess it's on...

If you want to explore the area you'll probably want some sort of
transportation, and a motor home would give a lot of flexibility so you could
stay near where you want to fish. If you just want to catch fish stay at the
Slide Inn and fish the ditch out back. g (Actually you can cover a lot of good
fishing water in the Madison on foot from the Slide Inn).

Roger,

Last year I had a webpage put together with links to various inns, etc.
I spent a few minutes changing it around a bit for Jeff, who is
proving to be every bit as good a non-clavemeister as he is an
anti-clavemeister. You should check it out and hopefully it will
answer some of your questions.

As far as where to fly goes, I would fly into Bozeman, Montana if I
were you. Talk to Jeff about the specifics.

Jarmo,

IMO, a motorhome would be a viable option if you got a couple of guys
in on it unless you have the resources to tackle one on your own. They
aren't cheap to rent but I can see how it would be a very good option.
I dug into it a little and found two sites so far:

http://www.ctrvrentals.com/rates.html
http://www.piercerv.com/content.asp?id=11

There are pros and cons to a RV and it is up to you to make the
decision. Enough people show up to these events that you wouldn't have
to worry much about getting around and could use the motorhome mostly
just as a luxurious base camp. John Hightower has brought his
motorhome to a couple of conclaves so you should get in touch with him
and ask him about it.

see warren...it aint hard being a noneclavemeister. heck, you keep it
up and i might even persuade jim to come out this year...it'll be a hoot
just watching roger and bruiser in a "wade-off", while jim dictates to
you the necessary tie for another "bloody c" fly.

and, uh, as you know, i'm shy a load on the specifics. but, if the
price is right, west yellowstone isn't a bad spot to fly into
either...talk to choc about the specifics.
