"rw" wrote in message k.net... I've fished in roughly comparable situations. Wounded Knee in North Carolina is the closest parallel I can think of. I won't be going back there, but it was great fun that one time. It's Wounded Fork in NC. Wounded Knee was a different kind of hunt in an entirely different state. All I can remember is that it was Wounded Something-or-Other, and that the guy had a wolf -- a big one. And every one of the numerous little knickknacks and ornaments and tchotchkes in his place was related to fishing. And that the infamous college basketball coach Bobby Knight had just been there, recovering from one his more memorable chair-throwing falls from grace. The proprietor was gracious and he liked Walt Winter a lot. He allowed us to fish there. Walt lost a big one. I went back the next day, taking a guided spot that Joe MacIntosh had given up. The guide was Ollie, from the Orvis shop. Great guy. Fun to fish with. He came to the raffle that night and I won his raffle prize, a t-shirt, which you can see me wearing in this photo: http://home.earthlink.net/~royalwulff/rainbow.JPG :-) I caught two memorable fish. The first was a "Kamloops" rainbow (this is in North Carolina, mind you) that I caught on one of Ollie's "sucker egg" patterns. It looked like a perfect imitation of a Purina Trout Chow pellet. The fish was probably pushing 7 pounds, maybe more, and I caught it in a pool the size of a modest hotel hot tub. Ollie hot-netted it. There was no other way. Maybe saying that I "caught" it is a stretch. The second was a freakish palomino rainbow (which Ollie and the proprietor called "golden trout"). This was actually a challenging fish. I fished and fished and fished to it, nearly at my feet, with one pattern after another. It was driving me nuts. It finally took a beetle that I splashed down as hard at I could, right on top of it. Ollie was very excited. I have no idea how to get there, Wayno. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

Just want to know if I should pack the body armor :-) What's a little spraying with bird shot? You can go back to work and tell everyone how bad the mosquitos were. Yeah, he can do that after he gets out of intensive care. I believe he went to intensive care because of his age, not the wounds. I was sprayed with birdshot (abouot 200 yards away) when I was a kid. I had a split second to duck my head when I heard the shot hitting the tobacco barn. I had several shot hit my hat, and two his my hand. Left a welt - didn't even break the skin. This is yet another of the ridiculous "discussions" here on ROFF. From what I've heard, Cheney ****ed up, pure and simple - it involved hunting with guns and Cheney's finger was on the trigger. Barring someone literally setting up their own "self-shooting," if one is hunting and accidentally shoots someone, it's mostly on the shooter - you don't shoot unless you _know_ what's down-range. And Whittington's injuries are not material to Cheney's actions, whether Whittington went to intensive care or had a PA put some Neosporin and one of those useless "blood donation dot" bandages on his boo-boo. But this type of accident happens with hunting; hunting is not a perfectly safe sport because humans are involved. Yes, Whittington would share some of the blame _IF_ he didn't practice reasonable hunting safety by coming up unannounced and "popped" up out of a gully/depression. The real shame is that none of it is worthy of much more than a minor notice, and such an event wouldn't even make the DFW papers if it had occurred in Granbury (30 miles away) and involved a couple of DFW business exec-types. In fishing terms, it appears that Whittington walked up behind Cheney as he was casting and got hooked. As to the type of shot, I'd rather not have someone shooting toward me, but I'd much rather have someone shoot toward me with one slug than a pattern of 7 1/2's at 20 yards. In fact, at such ranges, small shot is much more likely to cause damage than a bullet fired from a typical hunting rifle. And Louie, at 200 yards, you weren't "sprayed," it just landed all around your general area, which is so common as to be considered typical in things like dove hunting - that's why sensible folks wear hunting hats and shooting glasses. Are you happy about voting for a poacher? In the grand scheme of things, considering the mind-boggling, scandalous illegality this administration is involved in, I guess not having the required hunting tag doesn't rank very high. But it's indicative of the sense of privilege and the basic incompetence of this crew. No doubt Cheney will blame his lack of a tag on some pathetic, low level member of his staff. That's not a very accurate picture of things, even from you. The upland stamp is a recent addition (like 3-4 months), replacing the Turkey tag, and if Cheney got his license in August (as most do), that would explain it. Whittington didn't have one, either. Prior to the change, quail came under the normal license (IOW, no stamp), and if Cheney has an old lifetime license, there is some confusion over what is required. In fact, they aren't even giving citations (just reminder warnings) for such things until next season because of all the changes that occurred recently with TX hunting regs - for example, "dove" stamps are now required for all species, too. Wawyers, based on other characteristics are, IIRC, lumped in with corn-eating deer and ferwal hawgs...IOW, shoot 'em at yer leisure...or pleasure, as the case may be... Of course, I'd defer to real he-man hunters like you, Ken, BJ, and others as to seasons and hunting regs...I mean, after all, I don't have any real cool huntin' gear and stuff...I've only been (legally) hunting in, and own and/or control hunting land, in about 15-20 jurisdictions... OTOH, the "HE SHOT SOMEONE!" coverage is pretty chicken****, and the lack of the new stamp is REALLY nonsense - this has been going on all season, and as such, the wardens aren't even issuing cites...ever known a departmental wildlife department to beg off cites across the board, _as an overall policy_, and _on species stamp/licensing requirements_ right across-the-board?
