Hey, I didn't even talk about your trip to the Beaverkill in 2003 with
the Long Island Fly Fishing Club. I think you've probably found that folks here believe the current licensing system is adequate to the task. If you have an alternative instead of a rant (how much does it cost to take the boat out for a day in comparison to a license?), I'd like to hear it. I've seen worse systems (in Europe where most of the water is privately held), so I believe the current system is fair, though not equitable. I find the 10-day out of state license to be the best bet as this gives me both weekends on a week-long trip. Unfortunately, most states have a 2-3 day license and a 7 day license. Secondarily, I would like to be able to get licenses on-line. Pennsylvania is wonderful in this regard. In some states, you need to go to the local city hall. So, instead of trolling, would you care to posit a solution? Frank Reid |

So, instead of trolling, would you care to posit a solution? Perhaps you missed my original post in the ensuing flame war, but I did posit a solution. The problem I identified is that non-residents are overcharged for a few hours of fishing -- and inconvenienced -- by having to go to an out-of-the-way place and buy a 3-day license and trout stamp. This subsidizes the locals and generates full employment for clerks. Also, if you get off the slab at 5:00 pm, you are unlikely to find a place open to purchase a license for the evening hatch. How about selling one-day catch-and-release stamps from a machine for a buck or two (or even five) at the village hall? Together with your out-of-state resident license (for which you paid a chunk), this would be made legal and would do the job all around and be fair and equitable. Why should a fisherman who travels pay 10X as much for licenses as Bubba, who fishes even more often? Ken C |
