TR: Pecos River, NM

Fished the Pecos River above Pecos, NM, east of Santa Fe, last
Wednesday (6/7). Water very shallow, clear. SWMBO saw some fish, but
I didn't. Locals say that there was only one snowfall last winter,
thus no runoff to speak of. Fish stressed. Talked with one man who
that morning caught three lil bitty browns, kept one about six inches.

Even though I didn't see, much less hook any trout, had a good
time casting. Due to schedule of sightseeing and an approaching storm,
we cut short our piscatorial peregrination. Wanna go back if
there is significant snowfall above this winter.
Had a good experience at the flyshop in Santa Fe (High Desert
Angler). They have recently moved into a new location. After two
visits, we finally found that they had parking in the rear. (There is
*no* parking on any street near there.) Staff was helpful.
And to the guy who was carping about having to pay for
non-resident licenses, I didn't mind having to pay the $22.00 for the
one-day license. I don't get to fish in an actual trout stream that
often, and it was worth it for the experience.
The upshot of this report is that if you're going to Northern
New Mexico, don't expect to catch anything, and if you do, be very
gentle with them as you land and release them.
SWMBO even said that she might take up the flyflinging habit so
that she'll have something to do whilst I'm fishing. She found that
trying to sketch on the river was totally unfulfilling. For one thing,
I kept moving my rod back and forth.

was a TV show that is now defunct as the character who played Rumpole, Leo

The answer to your question is no. I am not new here. I have been reading
this board from time to time for more than a few years. I have posted VERY
rarely.
The concept and involvement in the institution of marriage is
contraindicated for a happy life of fishing. Therefor I have had no exposure
to the idea of "She who must be obeyed".

And quite frankly, if I've got time to be on the computer... than I have
time to be wetting a line somewhere. Which would you choose?

I just hadn't heard SWMBO before.

Maybe a short introduction is in order...

I was raised in Anchorage, Alaska. My father put a spin rod and bobber in my
hand at age 5-6 and then a friend of his gave me my first flyrod,( a big,
heavy, awkward fiberglass job with a cheap Mitchell reel), at age 11. I have
never looked back.

I have moved to places just to be able to learn and fish new water. Hell, I
dated a girl once just because she had a home near the Clearwater, ( a
trophy Grayling fishery), and broke up with her at the end of summer because
the fishing dropped off.

For awhile I was a dry fly elitist. I have tempered that opinion somewhat.
Years of counseling finally paid off. I no longer have the urge to pee on
guys that cast nymphs.

At one point I worked for Jim Barchi and Scott Rods when they were still at
the end of the road in Berkeley, CA. I started out wrapping guides and moved
up to the coating room before leaving. While there I was able to build quite
a nice collection of Scott Rods and Gunnison reals. (they had a nice trade
agreement).

After returning to Alaska I joined a friend in managing a rod shop that used
to be located up at Lake Otis & Tudor. I also taught beginning flyfishing
for women for a year or two. Used to hold classes at Cheney lake on Baxter
Road.

Now I am living in Ayer, MA. I am the Parks and Rec. Commissioner here.
Most of my free time is spent sending poppers to Bass who have never
experienced a fly.

My Next Trip??? ...Going to Alaska for 12 days in August.

My Most Memorable Fishing Experience??? ...I have two,
(1) Last summer I was able to take my girlfriends 7 year old boy out for his
first time fishing and watch him catch his first fish. My time in the Navy
and various volunteer things I've done don't compare. THAT was my proudest
moment.
(2)While float tubing a small lake in the Matanuska Valley some years ago I
watched an eagle swoop down out of a tree and pluck a rainbow out of the
water less than 20 ft. from where I was sitting.

So, I am...and shall remain....

Which is why I introduced you to another acronym seen around here. Welcome
to the more active side of roff; you seem like a nice enough guy, but a
thicker skin might be in order, as no one threw a barbed hook at you. Being
a new poster, you might also soon find out how some folks here feel about
