Bass of a different color

After a two year absence from the Ohio river I started fishing it again this
past may, and it was by accident that this happened .[ Playing with a new
rod ].I tied a white rooster tail on and on the 4th or 5th cast I caught a
stripper . A little later a sauger then a drum .It went like this for about
an hour. All of this action came standing on the boat ramp. Lately I've been
catching LMB at the ramp feeding on shad or skip jacks but their color is
not the same as the lake LMB that I've caught. The LMB that I catch in the
river are a pale green and don't have such a distinctive lateral line as the
LMB that I catch in the lake Also I caught a LMB from the river that was
almost 21 inches long that had distinctive lake bass marking. All of the
pale green bass from the river are less than 13 inches. What would be the
common name of the pale green bass???Kentucky bass?? Spotted bass??

Bass caught where there is not much light are often more pale in color.
Is the river muddy or much colder than the lake? Most of the bass I
catch in the winter here, when the water is muddy, are very pale but
they color up as the water clears and they move more shallow too.

Our spotted bass have darker markings than largemouth.

I find the lighter pale colored bass here, usually near open water, and then
the very very dark LM's that hang in the weed beds. Guess it's all about how
much light they are exposed to. The darker bass look more like smallies than
Lm's

I did a google search this morning and found that the pale green bass itht
I've been catching are commonly called Kentucky spotted bass.The pic's I see
shown on google are most likely the same fish. .. Question answered

I have found bass from different waters can vary dramatically.

Forinstance the smallmouth and the largemouth I catch in the canals seem to
have a more uniform color with less distinctive markings. The Largemouth
tend to be a pretty more uniform green with not much lateral line. The
small mouth tend to be a more uniform golden bronze with hardly any markings
except ont heir gill plates.

In the upper river the largemouth I catch vary in shade from light to dark,
but they all seem to have distictive markings. The smallies tend to be
lighter with very distinctive "spots" all over their body. I have pulled
big largemouth out of shallow heavy cover that were almost black, and others
jerked from open water lakes were almost white.

In the lower river the largemouth caught out of grass beds tend to have a
golden bronze color similar to the smallmouth I catch in the canals.

These are all the same fish, and the Colorado River provides the inflow and
ultimately the source of fish in all of these areas. Yet you would think
they were different subspecies at the very least to look at them.

P.S. According to Az G&F we don't have any spotted bass here. Just northen
strain largemouth and smallmouth.
