Gotta tell you, that fly absolutely SLAYED the smallmouth bass in a remote
river in Maine this summer. Pretty much every cast resulted in a sudden
explosive hit and a great tug-of-war with some poor fish. You can imagine
how my heart broke when I heard that telltale cracking sound on my backcast,
and saw the tippet bare on the front cast...

Frank...any chance of getting one or two more? I can send you something from
HK in exchange. :-)

If the fly works that good, then I would like to know how to tie it.
Any chance of tying instructions?

I had good luck with this fly, too, but it's definately a "lob" fly. With
the weight of the fly, a sharp backcast will, well - 'nuf said. ;-) I think
this is the one: http://gula.org/roffswaps/detail.php?page=FS2003&id=24 ,
but no recipe.

Speaking of Hellgrammites, I found this page a few weeks back:

Was that one I gave you or one of Frank Church's? I can post the
pattern for mine tonight.

Frank, I believe that was the one from last winter's swap. On my next
trip to Maine this month I will give it a try on a certain river to
remain un-named but it's initials are Androscoggin. :-)

I used grey schlappen for the hackle on that and the whole damn thing
was about 4 inches long. Sounds like a huge fly, but the smallies love
it. Its the only fly I use on the Potomac.
If you look at Harry Murrays pattern, he cuts off the tail straight. I
prefer tailing on this fly that has different lengths. Don't know why
it works better, but it does.
I tie some up for you Myron. When I'm done, I'll get your snail mail
addy.

Thanks, Frank! And I'll look around for some special little HK thing for
you. (Hopefully, she'll fit in the mail.)
