Default 3,179.6 miles of fun...

Rode the Harley to Sturgis South Dakota. MAN. big impression and much
introspective thought going down through the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Drank a bunch of beer in the bar where Russell Means stabbed that guy. Went
to wounded knee. Paid five bucks to have my picture taken with a hang around
the fort Indians..... Joe, excuse me.

We had planned on a two week trip and I was going to get to fish but my
buddy got called for "federal petite jury?" and had to be back earlier than
expected.....

The last time we went out...for a beer....we threw the tent on and headed to
south east Ohio. Three days later I saw a sign that said Boone, 11 miles.
So we turned west.....fun trip. And I would have been entirely justified in
writing a long and lengthy report about it because I had a "Zero Limit"
trout decal on my windscreen...

This time, I'm going to post some pics in the binaries. You will not be able
to see the vest and wading boots in the tour pack, but if you look
carefully, you will be able to see my five piece pack rod strapped in on top
of the tour pack, right next to the tent. And I guess that makes everything
okay.....

I'm headed up to the Rosebud Reservation for 2 weeks Friday, just east of Pine
Ridge. I plan on going over to Wounded Knee while I'm there. Then on to
Yellowstone for 3 weeks, Jackson for 2 weeks and Moab for a week before I head
back - probably not it time to make it up to NC before bear season.

Reminds me when I visited Brisbane Australia years ago. There was an
Aboriginal Tribe member at one of the outdoor shopping malls dressed up in
his Aboriginal attire, tribal beads, and tribal face paint playing his
didgeridoo. Nice solid deep tones that drew a huge crowd. I looked into
his Aboriginal leather basket he layed out which was stuffed with $5's,
$10's and $20's. So for $5.00 I took my picture with this native Australian
from the outback. Afterward, when no one was around, I was questioning his
didgeridoo, as he asked me where I was from. I told him I was from the Bay
Area California. I then asked him where he was from. He looked secretly
around then quietly replied; "I'm from East Oakland California mate."

Charlie, Wounded Knee is not much. A visitor's center which focuses more on
the American Indian Movement than anything else, although there is a picture
or two. Tourist wise is rather on the not much side...but I could stand and
feel the history.

If you are out in the parking lot, you may get approached by and individual
or two who are rather informative, willing to talk and they will end up
asking for a 'donation.' If you go across the street to the souvenir
stands, you will get approached again by those who are more direct.

Up at the cemetery, there was a nice young man. He had about a twenty minute
spiel on the whole thing, it was very interesting to hear him speak of his
great grandmother telling him of how they buried the bodies....much like
sitting on Wayno's back porch and Wayno telling me of how 'his' great
grandmother talked about Sherman coming through....

He did not ask for money, rather thanking those who came to visit.

I did want to see the place and am not sorry I did, gas up, stations are few
and far between.

In the visitor center is a donation box, throw five in for me and I'll pay
you back, send me your addy or the next time I see you. I was down to
fifties
and doobies by the time I got there.

If you go into the rez from the north off route 44, stop at the town of
scenic. Those are real bars and I wouldn't go in there after dark. Probably
not much after lunch 'cause there's liable to be more than a few who can't
hold their liquor....

In particular, there, in the visitors center were two ladies at the desk.
Of one I can only say that I wish I would have been there with an articulate
attorney who visits this group... Oh, a fine young Indian Maiden she was. In
that flower of youth that lasts until the mid thirties or so, god knows when
she started but she developed well, damned well...and I had not seen a
shower for longer than I like, nor had fresh clothing...sigh

Had I been there with that unnamed other, the following day would have been
interesting. I wonder who would have felt the most pain from walking about
with our shoulders square and gut sucked in pretending we were young???

I thought for a brief moment of telling her of my Indian heritage....but,
somehow, I don't think she would be impressed that my great grandmother (a
Cherokee) married my great grandfather ( a drunken river boat captain on the
might Mississippi) which left me at a genetic disadvantage...

If you go through Iowa, Aurelia, off route seven, stop at the cafe, it's a
step back in time.

Thanks for the tips, John. I'm in KC at a friends now, just getting
ready to head on north. I'll check out the cafe.

I'd read some about the memorial at Wounded Knee and and want to go,
like you said, for the sense of place rather than anything fancy to
see. I'll take care of the donation box, don't worry about payment -
your online tour was easily worth that much. ;-)
