Why not just go to your local "Tackle Shop"
& fire away the questions?

Try a few tackle shops and try to go during a slow part of the day. The
few tackle shops I know, are great places to get what you want, if they
carry it, but are not great places for advice. The staff are just too
busy to spend any quality time getting to know you. Not only that, but
they tend to give canned answers.

Try a few during their slow periods and you'll probably find someone
that enjoys taking the time to help beginners get started and knows what
they are talking about.

Other than that, try to find out if there are any fishing clubs in your
area and join up; if the club is worth the paper it's name is printed
on, you're sure to find fishing buddies that would be happy to get you
through the basics.

licenses

I'm a new retunree to the sport..I recommend for licenses checking your
local shops or just typing in your state name and fishing license. Some
states, like NJ, let you do your license right online. Others require you
to go to shops and agents.

I agree with the others about finding a friendly bait shop or tackle shop.
In some you will find folks who love to talk to anybody about fishing. In
others, you're lucky if you can talk them into taking your money, much less
getting any help from them.
On the "Fishin' Stuff" page of my website, there's a table with links to all
the states that offer fishing license online. With most of them, you can
print your license on your own printer after paying by credit card. A few of
them tack on a fee of a couple of bucks for the privilege of buying online.
If you buy them from your local dealer, you're helping him/her out & you
have an instant conversation-starter to see what you can learn from them.
Good luck.

Default BRAND new to fishing - a case in point

My wife & I went fishing this morning (Sunday). The fellow who runs the only
bait & tackle shop on the lake didn't show up today until 1 p.m. He is also
one of the folks who acts like he's doing you a favor by showing up at all.
Don't ask him for advice, that's "not his job". While we were there, Tim
Farmer (host of PBS's Kentucky Afield), dropped by. The bait shop fellow
never heard of him.
At the lake where we used to go, the tackle shop was open from 6 a.m. till
dark every day. The guy running it lived and breathed fishing. If you had a
pretty good day, he'd take your picture with your fish and hang it on the
bulletin board until he had to cover it up with a newer picture. He'd talk
about fishing all day if you wanted.
