To your body that is. This past week on Tuesday afternoon, I was feeling
kinda crappy but just put it off to "some kind of bug" or "just having a bad
day." After the feeling didn't change but started to get worse, I started
thinking about what might be going on.
Shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, pulse over 130 and numbness in
my left arm, told me that this just might be cause for concern. I asked my
wife if she minded doing me a little favor?

I probably shouldn't have told her what was going on, but I couldn't think
of any way to get her to drive to the Emergency Room without telling. I
might have been safer driving myself!

Well, it turned out that I was in the middle of having a heart attack! So,
after a little helicopter ride to a cardiac center, two stents placed in my
coronary arteries and some (actually a pile) of meds that I'll be on the
rest of my life, I'm fine (I think).

For the record, I'm 49 years old, in fairly good shape, but between the
smoking and being far too busy, (firefighter/emt, fishing guide, custom rod
builder, outdoor writer, editor, webmaster, plus a couple other little
"projects") I guess it was a bit too much.

I was able to set a record for the shortest stay in the Cardiac Intensive
Care Unit because I recognized the warning signs and I'm generally in good
shape. Plus, I was told that there is very little damage to my heart. So
guys (and gals), the next time you feel lousy, consider what else might be
happening. Learn the warning signs and heed them!

and being far too busy

I don't believe being too busy will cause a heart attack

My cardiologist told me that if I was going to smoke, make it cigars.
That struck me funny since I figured they were worse than cigarettes.
I don't smoke regularly during the day, but do like to light one up
when I have had a few beers and I noticed that when I would smoke a
cigarette in the evening I would get real dizzy and my lips would get a
little numb. For the first couple minutes I doubted that I could walk
straight. So after my doctor told me that I should be smoking cigars I
took notice of the the affects of the first one and to my surprise it
is not at all like smoking a cigarette. Long story made short, this
convinced me cigarettes are 90% poison. I don't know what they put in
them, but a good cigar doesn't make you sick. I smoke macaduno's
little murando cigars, usually 3 of them while fishing after work and
yes, I have always inhaled.

Hope you feel better soon and can get off the cigs.

You are probably predisposed to heart problems as well. My mother and
father smoked cigarettes every day of their lives except the last one
since they were 13. Dad passed away at 78 from a stroke and mother at
84 . Neither ever had heart problems and only mother had cancer.

Steve-O,
Man, this caught me off-guard. I'm really, really glad to hear you
o.k. Any chance that you're gonna quit the cigarette's? The North
American Huber is an endangered species and we need the alpha male on
this planet for many more years! I only wish I could be at the NWC, but
you know my predicament.................

Steve,

You just scared the sh*t out of me! Probably not as much as you scared
yourself and your family. I am happy to hear you are feeling "ok", take
it easy man you have way to much to see and do yet!
Again I am very happy to hear you are feeling better and I will see you
in about a week. I will be there from Tuesday (should pull in about 5am
, right at the lake) through Saturday (My father and I are fishing
Butternut lake on Saturday). I am still working on Paul, and he should
tell me this weekend for sure. You can put him down as a boater if you
would like, Paul Scheefer is his name.

Take care man, and I will see you very soon.

Busy, my arse. It's the cigarettes.

I'm 49 myself and I'm hoping to get up there and fish
with you one of these days, but if you keep smoking
you're gonna keep having heart attacks and that will
be a disappointment to me. And my disappointment can't
begin to compare with that of your future grandchildren.

Think about the grandchildren and throw those damn cigs
away.

And I'm glad to hear you survived your first heart attack !

Jeeze Steve!!! I'm glad to hear your ok now and hopefully ok in the
future.

After the last time I talked with you on the phone I had this nagging
feeling there was something wrong. You didn't sound right to me.
Last nite I was thinking about you and was going to call and see if
everything was ok, but my son called and we talked till very late
about family matters. (Ex wife should be fed to wolves or tigers but
that would be mean to the animals and might poison them)

I'll call ya.

Ok... either you're telling the truth, or this is a lame attempt to line up
an excuse for the whuppin' you're likely to take on Boom in a couple weeks.
Or it may be a ploy to get two weeks of time off to prefish before the NWC.

Well, if you're on the level, no doubt the Fast Cat will be too much
excitement for you to handle in your weakened state, so you can use Terry's
BassTracker, and we'll take the Cat out.

Now, you don't have to thank me.... that's what friends are for. Just
looking out for you, pal.

It would be hard to argue with that, however, I try to keep it to a
minimum since I have been tabacco dependent most of my life.

Cigarettes 15 to 32 pretty much 24/7

Smokeless tabacco till about 6 months ago (only after 4 p.m.)

Little 4 " cigars (max 3) after 4 p.m.

I think I am improving
