Broken rod help

In trying to remove a reel stuck on my sage xp 5-weight, I forced it
and ended up bending the (not sure what it's called) ring that screws
up to hold the reel onto the rod.

Any suggestions for how I can fix this... or, if it's not something I
can do myself, where I would get it fixed?

I bought it from a rod builder on ebay... so I'm guessing that Sage
won't cover it, will they? (The builder himself has not replied to
any of my emails.)

The reel seat is most likely epoxied to the blank, and you can usually
break the bond with heat. Try immersing the reel seat in a pot of
boiling water on the stove for 5 minutes and then twist firmly to
break it loose. If you know the manufacturer you might be able to
get a replacement ring from them, otherwise you can just glue on a
new reel seat. You can get them from many different sources; I
usually go to Hook & Hackle (http://www.hookhack.com)

I have to admit, I'm a little nervous about boiling my (relatively)
expensive rod. Is this pretty safe, and is gluing the rod back
together fairly straightforward?

Second, how badly is the ring bent? If you can get a small brass
hammer, you might be able to tap it back into shape, at least well
enough to engage the threads and lock the reel. I'm assuming the reel
seat is uplocking, so the ring is at the rear, away from the rod.

I never had the problem with the reel , but I'm with George. You
shouldn't have to ask around too long to find someone who does a bit of
rod building.

I had a problem with one of the eyes on my rod... I'm not so good at
storing them safely through the winter. I was just going to bend it
back in place and throw on some epoxy. Glad i found someone who has
some rod experience, I was probably about to screw the whole rod up...
and it only ended up costing me $15 to have it fixed right.

Before boiling your reel seat, drop over to www.rodbuilding.org and do
a search on this subject. You'll find many replys to your exact
question. Boiling your reel seat may be a bad idea depending on what
the seat insert is made from.
