Montana - West Yellowstone?

I'm trying to plan a fall fly fishing trip to Montana andi am
overwhelmed with the amount of information i am finding and was
wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

The trip is for my brother and i and We aren't really the type who
like to stay in those fancy lodges with the wide screen tv's and fancy
food. We tend to like more fend for yourself type accomadations. I
would like to rent a cabin and hire our own guide each day. I feel
that this is the best way to have a true native fishing experience.
The trip will be for 7-10 days depending on scheduling and we would
like it the middle of september early october.

If anyone can help me out i would appreciate it. Also if you have
other sugestions than the West Yellowstone i would like to hear them.

Well Montana is a big place g The Dillon area has several good waters
of wide variety to choose from, as does the Missoula area and many others.
Cut a Montana map in half, hang the western piece on the wall and throw a
dart while blindfolded, you just hit a place with good fishing.

West Yellowstone, itself, offers little except an entrance into the Park
( not even really Montana after a few miles ;-), there are four other
entrances and a couple are closer to much of the better Fall fishing in the
Park, and Park driving gets old fast.

My suggestion would be to research specific waters, decide which appeal to
you, and go from there, instead of picking a 'town' and working the other
direction.

What kind of fishing do you want? bobbing down a big river in a driftboat?
sneaking up on your knees to a meadow stream? pondering a huge collection of
varied insects and "matching the hatch"?, tossing a "big ugly" the only fly
you really need to carry? double hauling? 6Xing? long walks spiced with
solitude and a slight tingle at that noise in the bush? no walk and a cooler
of beer always within reach?


Another note: this year may shape up to be hot and dry. If so, Fall
choices will be limited - some years some streams are shut down completely..

Another, another note .... "Montana" is often used to really mean "the west'
..... for instance YNP isn't really Montana ... much of the best
fishing/scenery/getawayness in "Montana" is really in Wyoming or Idaho or
even Utah

The way it looks w the winter snow pack that we had, I do believe
(unfortunately) that you may be correct.
I would look at the larger rivers - Gallatin Madison Bitteroot and others

Although I hope that we get much needed precipitation to keep these watrers
flowing but
