Sandy as in Sandy Pittendrigh ?

Oh good grief, you really have crossed over to the dark side.

These guys on rofb are alright, upright, fine-as-wine fellows and
they do know their bass fishing but boy, did you ever introduce
yourself all wrong to this bunch ! ;-)

I'm a fly tier and fly fisherman. I don't know much about
casting rods or bass lures. But I have figured out how to make
crankbait lures with a relatively fast easy and cheap
method (no carving balsa wood or injection molding a no kind).
You can make these wigglers as large or as small as you want,
and as heavy or as light as you want....with a wide, slow
shallow diving wobble, or with a tight, faster deep diving
vibration. Better yet, they're (mostly) soft bodied, so
fish bite and hang on, rather than spitting right away.

But how heavy is right? 1/4oz?
3/8oz? 1/2oz?

What is the most useful weight to make a 3 or 4" long
crankbait?

Not true Ken, that's just your opinion and not fact. stop spreading rumors.
We love fly fisherman, we just hate the way they fish :;-)

Well, no one has answered Sandy's question yet. If he'd introduced
himself as anything *other* than a fly fisherman somebody would
have answered his question by now.

Sandy, tell them you're a hot 24 year old bass fishin' gal. That'll
get an answer out of them. ;-)

I have a hunch there would be huge market for
do-it-yourself lure-making stuff, it there was a fast
quick and easy way to make crankbaits. I'll get this
stuff online soon enough.

But basically it's easy: cut the body shape (with scissors)
out of lite weight closed-cell EVA foam. Cut a diving bill
(with scissors) from clear plastic sheeting (from the boxes
they package peppers in at Cosco, for instance). Glue the
bill to the foam with super glue or epoxy. Glue on some
weight, in the right places. Add as much weight as you want,
to make the lure as heavy as you want. Run a thin-diameter but
relatively stiff plastic tube through the foam body, from
the rear end to a hole in the diving lip. Snell a tippet
to what ever hook you like. Thread the tippet through the tube
and knot it to swivel, perhaps 12" up from the diving bill.

You can add feathers, dangling spinners, skirts, what ever you want.
Crankbaits cost what? 4-7 bucks each? You can make these
for peanuts, and they're better lures. Once you learn how
to tune the bills, you can custom create any action of diving
depth you want.

Hand painted, hand carved plugs can take a week to make.
Foam divers you can make in about ten minutes, or less.

I'll send some samples to Roland Martin, or one what's his name.

That's because he asked it as multiple choice, but the answer is yes.

Well Ken, there's a good reason why I haven't answered Sandy's question. I
don't have a decent answer. There are far too many variables in his
question.

We need more information before a responsible answer can
be given.

Good answer. The only thing I know about crankbaits is my Dad called
the rap-a'-las and I learned later that it's pronounced rap'-a-las. ;-)

And I don't mean to make too much of the fly rod divide here on rofb
but you gotta admit there's a lot of hardware chuckers here who don't
even extend their pinkies when they're having their afternoon tea and
crumpets. ;-)

C'mon Steve !
Crumpets are the remains of plastic baits laying in the bottom of the boat.
I guess we need to add that to the FAQ.........

Heck, I'm not even sure what a crumpet is. ;-p

LOL !

What are you doing Monday ? I'm pulling in to Boulder Junction
Sunday night and I have three days of musky fishing with Bill
Sherer starting Tuesday, but Monday is an open date for me. As
it turns out my wife's class at Dillman's Resort was cancelled
due to low enrollment so I'm on my own for the week.

I was thinking maybe brookie fishing on the East Branch of the
Presque Isle but really anything *other* than heaving a 9 wt
all day sounds good to me. I'd hate to be that close and not
have a chance to at least meet for a beer at the end of the day
and I know you're headed off bear hunting at the end of the week.
