fly fishing etc.

I'm going to Kodiak Alaska fishing around August/ September. I want
to get back into fly fishing. I haven't fly fished in years and I
need to get some gear. Since this will be my first time in years can
somebody suggest where I can get some equipment for a first timer. I
need to get some waders for fly fishing and also working the rivers
with spinners?

Since I'm only going to be trying this for about a week I don't want
to spend a bunch of money.

Any ideas about how I should equip myself?

In the time frame you mention, you should catch the tail end of the Reds
(Sockeye)and start of the Silvers (Coho)on Kodiak. Though an 8 weight outfit
is a little overkill for the Reds(though not by much) you will need it for
the Silvers. If Kodiak gets enough rain by the time you get there the
Buskin right near the airport gets a decent early run. You can get an
adequate used outfit on eBay.
The weather at that time of year is usually cool enough that you shouldn't
need expensive breathable waders. Decent neoprenes can be bought in most
any flyshop (or even Walmart or Costco) for under $70. The rivers are fairly
easy wading , so cheap felt soled wading boots are adequate. One of my
friends gets by just fine with the cheap side zipper boots from Cabela's.
You won't need an expensive reel, ( Abel, Ari T. Hart, Ross,
Sage,Loop,etc.)but you should get one with a reasonably decent drag
(Redington, Tioga, Scientific Anglers, etc.- also available on ebay).
Have fun. I've been going up there every year for the past 6 years, but
usually in the Sept/Oct time frame to catch the peak of the Silver run. The
run was prety much of a bust last year on many of the Kodiak rivers, but the
outlook is good for this year.

Unless somebody is paying your way, you are going to spend a bunch of money
getting there, fishing, eating, sleeping and getting back and you don't have
a lot of time to plan your trip, to cut your costs and get your stuff
together.
1. Call, email, fax or overnight a request to whoever is taking you on the
island for a list of stuff they have there you can use. Ask for a list of
mandatory things you must bring and optional stuff you need to bring.
2. Call the closest fly shop, ask the owner if he knows whoever is taking
you or if he outfits on the island or if he has any knowledge about it.
Keep calling to you find somebody who knows something.
3. Take all the lists of stuff you need, go see the fly shop owner, tell him
how much money you have to spend and have him fix you up. Don't wait! He
may have to order stuff to fit you!
4. If you take a bunch of yard sale, eBay or drug store junk up there with
you and it disintegrates, the memories of what you missed out on will haunt
you the rest of your life.
