OT and Tech question-Going over to the Darkside

I've been using the Intell/Microsoft based PC's since the days of the
8088 chip and DOS 2.X, thats' what I know. After 20+ years of using
this platform I have decided to go to other side and purchase an iMac
since they now run on an intell chip and I can still run my financial
planning/modeling work stuff I carry home on a Window's partition.
What really surprised me was by the time I got done configuring
another Dell, it's price was only $75 less than the iMac but the iMac
had the faster chip.

I'm looking forward to playing with the system but per the local Apple
store, there's not a newsreader in the pre-loaded software. I've
ordered the Mac version of stuff like Office, and such but what would
the Roffian apple user recommend for newsgroups and stuff like photo
editing?

The Apple was just delivered this morning and I'm supposed to be in
Michigan fishing after tonight so I might not get to do much other
than plug it up and make sure it boots up before Sunday but it will be
nice to learn something new.

I use Thunderbird (Mozilla) for my newsreader, iPhoto comes with
your box but I bought Adobe Photoshop Elements, mainly because I
was used to it. You'll be glad you made the switch.

This is just too funny, as this post could've been written by me back
in May. Been in the IBM/Intel/Microsoft camp since 1983/84 and I'm
typing this on my shiny-new 24" iMac.

Just been using Google for newsgroups right now, but for photo
applications, it depends on what you need. I have Photoshop Elements
5 on my Dell but went with Aperture on the iMac. I'm not big into
photo manipulation, rather I need photo organization and correction
(editing), which Aperture does better than Photoshop Elements. The
biggest Aperture advantage comes from how it handles RAW. If you
shoot in RAW, Aperture does not convert it to JPEG the way Elements
will. Rather it maintains the RAW image as a master, and any mods you
make are saved as RAW adjustment files. The master is never touched.
You can make as many of these adjustment files as you like, simply by
creating new versions. You're not duplicating the original RAW file
and chewing up space. When you need a JPEG, simply output the version
you like.

Personally, I don't frequently shoot in RAW.

If you don't, keep in mind that the version of iPhoto that came on
your machine has a fairly robust (for the casual digi-cam user) set of
image manipulation tools (and image sharing tools as well.) You may
not need anything more than iPhoto if you are siimply taking snaps.

Thunderbird for an email and newgroup client. The Safari web browser
that comes with your iMac is good, but I use Firefox and I like it. Free
downloads at http://www.mozilla.org/.

Couldn't agree more.
I'm a software developer/designer, so my criteria might be somewhat
different. But I doubt it. Windows is enormously annoying. Network
and
device timeouts and time-slicing don't even work (try to do something
else while your scanner gets going, for instance).

I like linux for a development platform; Mac for office and surfing
around.
Winblows is so bad it's hard to figure out how it ever succeeded.
Ah, oh. I forgot. It's the magic of the marketplace. :-)
