I'm sorry you guys lost me, what are these tippet rings? http://www.jsflyfishing.com/cgi-bin/...LL-295020-0000 Tippet rings are just what they sound like, little rings between the leader and tippet. They're a neat innovation and they came up in the discussion of furled leaders because they're practically the only thing I like about the furled leaders I bought recently. -- Ken Fortenberry |

I have tried treating them with red Mucilin but it doesn't appear to help much. -- Ken Fortenberry |

I have tried treating them with red Mucilin but it doesn't appear to help much. IMHO, the thread leaders are much better. Even when furled, mono still has quite a bit of memory, and as you noted, Mucilin doesn't seem to work on them. I've been playing around with Coats & Clark nylon quilting thread (0.005 diameter, IIRC) as well, and they seem to be more supple than mono, and float better. But they're still not as nice as thread. If you'd like to give a thread leader a try, let me know. I should be able to whip up a couple for you over the weekend. I make really light ones with 8/0 for small stream/rod fishing and regular trout leaders from 6/0. I tie a single surgeon's loop (for hanging for treating) or overhand knot in the butt end to keep them from unraveling. Don't cut that until you're ready to nail knot it to your line. :-) I'll leave it to you to treat them and add your own tippet rings. :-) Chuck Vance (furled leader pimp) |

What knots are reused? Russell |

What knots are reused? OK, I just went back and read Larry's description and have a better idea of how these things work. I still wonder about hinging. Is the tippet just not heavy enough to make that an issue? Does the tippet turn over well? I've got to find me some. I'm for anything that makes tying on tippets easier. Russell |

Flies still go on the end of the tippet. FWIW, it's a simple enough matter to take the needle you use for clearing hook eyes, pick up a ring on that, slide your leader or tippet between the ring and needle and tie off. I use an improved clinch of four turns for the leader to tippet ring, and standard five-turn improved clinch for ring to tippet.) And to answer other posters' questions: I've never had a tippt ring drag down a tippet or leader; they float quite well. Hinging hasn't been a problem either. Chuck Vance |
