We should have a SE Minnesota mini-Clave. I fished in Whitewater
State Park years ago, caught some fish while wet wading and had a
nice enough day astream but when I got back to my campsite I found
a sweet 16 complement of leeches on my legs. What a bloody mess
THAT was. Kinda put me off SE Minnesota, if you know what I mean.

Wow. I've never done any wading in Whitewater that wasn't wet wading
(in fact, I just got some waders this year, as yet unworn.). Never
got a leech.

One of the beauties of Whitewater is that there are supposedly no
mosquitos. I've been camping there on and off since '86 and did
finally see one mosquito last summer. It was weak, like the last
mosquitos of autumn, and it seemed almost a shame to kill it. I did,
though. It might have come in on a camper's vehicle.

I do have waders, even though I hardly ever use them, so it's
high time I gave SE Minnesota another shot, especially if you're
willing to be mini-Clavemeister.

I have not the least idea how to be a Clavemeister, even mini. There
is a large group of bunkhouses with a sort of lodge for gathering and
a shower / toilet building among them that'd be great for a large
clave. Expensive compared to camping in the group site, unless you've
got a good sized group. But there's heat. That can be important early
or late in the fishing year.

Hmmm. Anyone else interested in SE MN in '04? If so, I'll question
the DNR about rates and ask my boss (who stays around there sometimes)
about other places nearby. Nearest towns are Elba (just north of the
park. Sort of a crossroads with a biker bar and gas station and a few
houses) and St. Charles, a few miles to the south (a real town, with a
supermarket and all that.). St. Charles has at least one motel on
the west side of town. Well, sort of. 40s or 50s sort of thing, IIRC.
I think that some of the pretty nice trailer park looking place
between the Park and Elba are rentals.

Rainbows might be stocked, but I don't believe browns are. I'm not
sure about brookies. If there are any that is. Maybe up the expert
creek where you have to walk to get to it. The fish might be pretty
naive up there. I'm the only person I ever saw (of the very few I've
seen at all) hike up there with fishing gear.

I do not organize things well. On the few group camps I've been, more
or less, responsible for, I've rented a group site, told everyone the
dates and assumed they'd arrange their own tents and food and chip in
on firewood and let it go at that. I've not tried to arrange any
amusements, group cooking, or trips to the local drinking
establishments. I do occasionally bring along larger screen tent in
case of rain or too many bugs.

the fishBC forum at:

http://fishbc.com/cgi-bin/board/foru...opics&number=2

is a good place to get info and havediscussion with anglers from all over
BC. You can pretty much get info on any area and run of fish.

Jeff West Coast Fisherman is another book put together by some BC
Jeff boys. but I haven't read it.

Ahh, I first thought that it was a magazine, but I found it:

http://www.sportfishingbc.com/articl...fly_fisher.htm

Seems to be highly recommended, thanks. And I see that Barnes and
Noble has both books, this one and also 'The Gilly' (although 'The
Gilly' only as used).

Thanks, keep them coming!

there is a magazine called West Coast Fly Fishing that one I'm pretty
sure is put out by the same group as the book. Northwest Fly Fishing is an
magazine and it covers Alberta northwest USA and British Columbia. It

always
seems to have some great articles about fishing in some of BC's Rivers.
http://www.sportfishingbc.com/tackle...flyfishing.htm
http://www.chironomid.com/articles/chan_bio.html
http://www.fishbc.com/ guide to lakes and rivers in BC
http://www.bcfisherman.com/info-books.asp (a list of books about

flyfishing
BC)

Now my 2 cents.
A few places that are worth seeing. and some time lines on a few

rivers,
I was going to give you the whole tour but realized quickly I

would
probably be writing a book. The most amazing place to fish for scenery,

fish
and adventure has to be Terrace in the Fall. The mushroom pickers are all
over the side of the road and this is something to see but the fishing is
usually pretty amazing. The Skeena is a good river but I like the Nass
because there isn't so many people. There are lots of Bears including
Grizzlies up there that time of year so be careful. They won't usually
bother you as long as you follow the rules. If they want it.. give it to
them and if you **** Bury it deep. (I am seriously not lying about the

last
one and there is a story to go along with it but that for another time)
There is also 2 glaciers up there you can walk on and the Southern tip of
Alaska is right there. Hyder is worth seeing up there to.
Spring In Vander Hoof is sick with fish. Around the Kenny Dam area

there
is so many lakes and creeks that 4 pound fish is the norm. And I had an
experience there where every single cast was a fish. It was gross cause

they
where all big and didn't seem to care what I was using or where.I

seriously
got bored from catching to much fish. It is possible.
Anyway good look and I'll look through my book collection to see if I can
find or think of any more. BC is seriously one of the most amazing places

in
the world. Have a great trip,

since Gord simply has a link to a commercial web site as a sig - as do some
other regular posters I can't see what's the problem.

No, he didn't. It was in the body of his message. He had _no_ sig
file.

The problem is that Gord used a request for literature as an excuse
to post a commercial for his business. One would think that a British
Columbia outfitter would be able to recommend at least one or two books
about fishing in British Columbia to a guy from Finland who wanted to
spend the winter planning a trip, but Gord chose to post nothing but a
self-serving commercial. A commercial that was, at best, misleading.

Gord's commercial was mildy, VERY mildly, rebuked and so he came back to
roff to lie and whine about it. The lying and whining is despicable and
offensive, and that too, is the problem.

Well, it would be nice to have an general sort of idea of the proposed

I'd probably be up for it. SWMBO would be eager to visit our daughter & new grandaughter in the Twin
Cities. I got to fish the S. Fk. of the Whitewater, just west of Altura, few days this summer when we
went to visit our daughter & grandchild - I can take a screaming newborn only so long, even if it is
my first grandchild.
Even though the fish I caught (all browns) were quite small by western standards (6-10"), I found the
fishing quite enjoyable and challenging.

Whitewater State Park in SE MN. A pretty place where I even know a
few reputedly good spots to fish. Of the twenty to thirty rangers
I've dealt with there, only one was a dope, but he was a friendly
dope.

When is what I'm having a problem with. Can't be Memorial Day. June
is difficult because of the WI FFboard trout clave over in Ellsworth
the 11th to 13th and I'll probably be doing a canoe trip around the
third week with a buddy (though that can be re-arranged). Can't be
4th of July weekend. Been at a State Park or two for that holiday.
Other than that, I think suggestions from possible attendees are now
in order. May is pretty open, and, AFAIK, August is completely open,
September is fine until the season closes at around mid month. April
is iffy. Sometimes it's nice enough that wet wading is wonderful,
other times that river valley collects the cold and I sulk in my tent
or fish off the bridge where the worm dunkers like to be.

(Gah. I'm occasionally turning to look at the TV. There's a special
on rats on right now. Found out that white rats were bred first for
the pits with terriers to kill them. In dim light the blood showed up
better when the dog injured or killed one. And that's why when rat
research started, there were so many available that white rats became
the standard. Good, the channel switcher just went back to the
football game.)

Speak now with your 2004 schedules, hopes, and dreams. Of trout.
Trout, damnit.
