Can a person go up or down weight wise on a rod rated 5 to a 4 or 6?

I would say to try all three and remember to cast each of them at the distance
you fish the rod most often. If most of your casts are 15 to 25 feet, the rod
might work better with one line at that distance rather than the line it would
like when casting 65 feet.

A year of so ago, a new company was promoting a new line of rods. They were
only going to use one speed of graphite for all rods. If you wanted the rod
to act like a fast graphite rod, you were supposed to go down one line
weight. If you liked slow rods, you were to go up one line weight. I think
that they are out of business
