Each day I do a little research on Patagonia and write an e-mail or two to
start developing contacts there. One thing that has popped up is the high cost of renting a vehicle. It occured to me that maybe I could buy a used one ( probably 4x4 ), use it 60 days, and re-sell it before flying home .. for less than renting for that period. Before I give this more thought and research, let me ask .... is there some hidden ( to me ) reason why this is an absurd idea unworthy of pursuing? |

Larry: You are my hero & guinea pig and hopefully a great source of info Please keep us all informed of your plans for and your trip to Patagonia It is on my agenda in the next year or 2 with or w/o my wife Some people are able to find small isolated villages that they know and go back to year after year but as yet I have not been able to get a handle on these - and I can speak Spanish Thanks Fred |

Depending on the country, a non-citizen may be in a sticky legal position driving, be it in a rental or a car they own (either purchased in the country or imported into it with them). However, you are _generally_ safer from a liability standpoint with a rental, or at least forewarned of any potential risks because the rental company doesn't want to lose the car or be on the hook for any trouble you might get into. My advice would be to research the situation as to the actual _law_ as well as the application (or lack thereof) of it with regard to both ownership/buying and selling a vehicle as well as being a alien owner/driver. In some cases, you could be at fault regardless of the situation (even if an unlicensed drunk driver in a stolen car rear-ends you) simply because you are an alien (by law) or "at fault" (in practice) because you are what might appear to be a rich "American"/foreigner/easy mark/etc. IAC, I'd not spend more than I was willing to walk (or run) away from should the situation call for it. Thanks for the advice ... only problems I've found 'recorded' thus far revolve around border crossings between Argentina and Chile and not having "the right" vehicle paperwork ... apparently more than just a 'pink slip' .... such paperwork comes with a rental ( but be sure to tell them you're planning a x-ing ) I hear. |

IF I go it will be at least next season ( a year roughly ). If I like it and find I can afford it, I may return annually to a particular 'base." Thus far I've developed the impression that you can have any degree of 'adventure' you wish and still find quality fishing. That is, you can be packed into remote areas far from roads, or you can stay in a town and day trip ... and still find fishing that will please .. me. Such fishing will be better than much in current Montana, but may NOT be epic encounters with double digit fish, or other dream-world situation. I find little mention of 'dry fly' fishing :-( but that is probably because most visiting anglers are doing a 'fish of a lifetime' thing, suggesting sunken lures ... "my size" trout rise to bugs, bugs that live in clean cold water, something Patagonia has plenty of still .... I'll find 'em G I get fed up with our culture during the times each year that I live in it ... ... not just our politics, lots of crap that simply qualifies as 'our culture' ... "buy, buy, buy, it's what makes you, ... you" bull**** mainly . I get almost totally away from that, even though I'm only a mile from town, each summer. But my current summer schedule isn't enough time away to suit me each year. I'm not looking for death defying adventures, rather some camping near good waters, where Nature still controls most of what occurs and what I notice and ponder each day. Fishing equal to what I get each summer would be just fine with me, I have little internal drive to be a fly rod hero ( although if I am, expect pictures and bragging :-). I, honestly, wouldn't consider going to Patagonia "instead of" Montahoming but it adds months to my potential "fishing" season. |

Doubt if you could do much better buying reselling, including insurance. Might save $3-400, but is that worth the time and hassle? |

They call them "backpacker specials" I think. Old beaters for cheap. Don't know about Argentina. |

Buy a good VCR and make a movie. If nothing else the trip should be worth an artical in some fly- fishing mag. Maby you can get Jeep or Land Rover to arrange for a car. Art Wolfe had a show a few weeks ago and he didn't seem to have trouble with cars. |
