Despite Tim's constant protestations, I'd venture a guess that most
Ruffians attitudes are similar. We don't have problems with areas that
are C'n'R; if we choose to fish them we follow the rules. But it's not
an all or nothing situation for us like it is for Tim. We are
comfortable in how we approach the sport. Tim isn't, therefore he's
trying to drag everyone else down to his level.

I've run into C&R bigots on the water, typically when I'm seen killing a
fish. They're extremely annoying, but rare.

I don't know of a single C&R bigot on ROFF. There is, however, a C&K bigot.

BTW, I'll gladly kill trout that are stocked. (I think stocked fish cook
up very well -- perfect pan size and well fed if freshly stocked :-).

I'm loathe to kill a wild trout unless it's fatally hooked. Anyway,
keeping a wild trout is usually illegal where I fish locally (unless
they're brook trout).

The "subsistence" argument for anti-C&R is absurd.

You can't tell the difference between a wild and a stocked trout.

Yes I can.

You can tell a fish that was born in the river versus one that was
stocked as fry or that was stocked as a catchable and is a multi-year
holdover? Unless you're talking about Steelhead with clipped fins, I'd
sure like to hear how you can tell.

Amazing. The longest continuous troll in the history of roff
persists practically unabated.

Credit where credit is due, Tim Walker is the most persistent,
dogged, tireless and pertinacious troll ever to start the same
old bull**** for the thousandth time on roff.

If nothing else, (and there is nothing else), the guy has
stick-to-itiveness.

I'm definitely not the troll Ken. ...

Yeah, you're a troll. Your position vis-a-vis C&R is vacuous,
dishonest, scientifically indefensible and insulting. I have
proven this to my satisfaction by trying to engage you in an
honest debate in your forum of last refuge alt.flyfishing.

You're a troll, a spectacularly successful troll, but just a
friggin' troll.

Your pal,

I am *not* your pal.

I used to think Tim was a bit of a crackpot until I started reading the
works of Ted Kerasote, who speaks eloquently of respecting the animals you
harvest (and it's not nice to play with your food). I still primarily
practice catch and release fishing, but I don't feel as smug and
self-righteous about it as I used to. Damn you Walker!

Man is an omnivore, omnivores eat meat, fish are meat. Sport has
nothing to do directly with eating. Catching and eating fish is
natural, spending serious green to turn caught food loose isn't. OTOH,
it's about footprints - man has decided that he is entitled to play with
what might be food, but not make it food. Is it right or wrong? Hey,
that's up to the individual, but to come off as some sort of
conservationist because you're letting food swim away is just plain ol'
rationalization of doing what you want, the rest is just bull****. Of
course, there's the argument that there's no substantive harm done - the
footprint is small - because the overall population isn't substantively
effected by the low mortality of CnR. Yeah, well, if your son,
daughter, mother, father, etc. is the only one killed in a battle, how
low a mortality is insignificant...?

Hey, you're gonna leave footprints...just do your best not to make them
on your ****in' tonsils...or someone or something's ass...

I see fishing as another way of interacting with the natural world, not
too different from birdwatching or hunting (on a C&K scale from 1 to
10). :-)

I don't shed many tears for the fish. If it weren't for sport fishermen
looking after their interests, they'd be long gone.

Probably hates to see pool players using garden rakes also.

Oh, my Dog; he's from Arkansas.

Take centuries of inbreeding, stir in some federal projects like large
dams, send Orvis catalogues with lots of pictures of fly fishing gear,
hike up the holler to get the sucker gigger to steer your john boat,
advertise to St. Louis, Little Rock, Memphis, Dallas, and Chicago
yuppies with more money than sense. and you will have a fundamentalist
C&R culture.
Obviously, these interlopers have presented a picture of fly fishing
to the impressionable locals, who think that they represent all
FF'ers. (I say "picturre", as reading is not a normal skill
there'bouts).
It is therefore understandable that HG is upset. Although he barks B
movie platitudes, thinking he is presenting ideas. he may have run
across some of these "city fellers" in the john boats.
Enjoy

cheers

oz, who lives only about 100 mi. north of there and sometimes fishes
there if I get tired of picking over at Mt. View. -- and, yes, I can
feel my brain withering ever since I moved here.

Almost anywhere in early spring, a large (#6 or so) black, very fuzzy
fly DRAGGING THE BOTTOM often works when nothing else will.

Sorry 'bout that. For me it was probably Thomas McGuane but also, that
one incident I had, that I still can't shake, is that 14" wild trout
that sliced it's gut from stem to stern like it had been cleaned, on
barbed wire or glass, while playing it, that started some serious
introspection that has not waivered an iota since.

Tim is more than a bit of a crackpot, he's a certifiable
looney-tune. Respect is in the head of the fisherman.
C&R regulations are in themselves no more, or less,
respectful of the fish than any of our other game laws.
