A friend of mine asked me what kind of sunglasses I use during various
light conditions. He asked me what I thought about Action Optics. I
told him I didn't have any experience with that brand so I did some
surfin! Geepers! $160.00 per pair with at least two lens colors
recommended! What's everyone's thoughts here in ROFF? Tks. Bill in
va.

I wear Ocean Waves, brown lenses with a green mirror as my primary fishing
glasses. I like them quite a lot. My backups are Maui Jim gray lenses,
very good glasses but less satisfactory on the water. I also use some
plastic lensed, tackle shop glasses of no particular brand that work well in
low light conditions and have built in magnifiers. I do not use these in
bright conditions or for long periods of time.

My experience is that glass lenses have less distortion than plastic lenses.

I haven't tried Action Optics but have seen a lot of advertising for them.
I know that they offer a photocrhomic lense. My experience with such lenses
in corrective glasses is that they never get dark enough to satisfy me. But
I like and use dark lenses.

While the price may seem steep to you, and to me as well, that's not an
uncommon price for quality sunglasses now. Get a hard shell case, treat
them like they are jewels. Before you decide, take a look at Ocean Waves.

I'm pickier, by far, about my sunglasses than about my rods and reels

I don't have any Action Optics experience, but I spent more than that per
pair and carry two pair

However, "sight" fishing is basically all that interests me and I seldom
even take a cast unless I've seen my prey first. Those with a more
traditional approach probably don't need the best glasses they can find, but
I'd trade my Sage's, or Scott's for K-mart's budget line rods before I'd
trade my shades for cheapies G.

PS carry a lens cleaner, too ....3M makes a good one

AFTER I posted I realized that my shades fetish started training retrievers,
..... all day, every day, near the glare of the water, in the wind, handling
dogs 400 yards away is hard on the eyes The appreciation of great shades
was carried over to fishing ... it didn't start there

Find a field trial retriever trainer that has been doing it a number of
years and you will find a person very picky about sunglasses and fowl
weather gear g ... One learns that creature comfort leads to greater
effort for more hours and that, in turn, leads to more winning ( catching
more fish to be OnT :-) ( BTW, the National is just finishing up today,
here in town, and I think Lardy may have won another one ... for any
retriever buffs out there )

For my current specs, I found a Optometrist that specializes in shades and
put together a custom package of frames, lens, and features to suit my
needs ... I wear them for far more than fishing .... I'd hate to think how
tired my eyes would get with distortion and poor lens' Before this pair I
had Serengetti Strata shades that were pretty darn good, but better for
training than fishing ( lens color )

My favorite glasses are an old pair of Action Optics that I've worn for over
10 years now.

When the ear pieces broke and AO said there was nothing they could do
(discontinued model), I just bought some chums, slipped them over the stubs,
and am still wearing them streamside.

I bought a rather expensive pair of Jubols for hiking above the snow line,
but I really prefer the AO's

I live in sunglasses, don't step outside without them. If I open the door
to take the dog out or walk to the mailbox, the sunglasses go on first.
Whatever the good ones cost, and I don't buy designer brand names, they are
worth it. Get the best you can afford.

FWIW, I never said I think I'm in any way "elite" because I usually just
sight fish. On the contrary, actually.

I think it reflects a weakness of predator instinct. I just can't maintain
concentration "fishing the water" the way people with a more intense desire
to catch fish can and I see that as a failing.

The best fisherpeople approach the water, seek, and find, the most elegant
way to catch fish in the situation at hand, regardless of that situation and
the technique it suggests. From his posts, Willi comes to mind, on this
"forum." creative and skilled at a variety of methods. Those of us with
limited approaches are just that, limited, and in no way "superior" imho ...
just the opposite.

As an aside, I'm exactly the same in my bird hunting.

I love duck and especially Honker hunting over decoys. I can sit when
nothing is flying and greatly enjoy "just being in a nice place." .... this
is much like sitting on the "anglers bench" waiting for a fish to rise.

Then, when the geese are first spotted, often a mile or more away, I am
super, super intense in my calling, and other efforts until my prey is
either captured or failure is accepted.....this is much like the stalk,
pattern selection, and presentations to the rising fish, very intense, very
much in the moment " now"

But, although I love to eat pheasant, I very seldom hunt them ( I'm
surrounded by them, it's season now and I've heard shooting this morning,
but I haven't hunted them in a number of years ) because the "hunting the
field" with the idea it may have birds doesn't hold my attention, much as
"fishing the water" doesn't. One can neither really relax and appreciate
the "place," as on the angler's bench, nor do I find the intensity of
concentration and predator behavior in myself that stops time and merges me
with Nature in the way that is my major reason for hunting and fishing
....both reasons I go out are compromised.

As I said, I see this as a weakness of predator instinct, compared to
others, and, certainly not a superiority.
