Here in WA I have been very rarely checked. But the thing they seem to
focus on is the catch "card." If you don't have it on you its a fine
or at least pack it in time. WA 's licencing system reflects the Peter
Principle in spades. For one, it's not a card at all but a strip of
smear-able old fashioned (thermal?) adding machine tape. The combo
licence has multiple "pages" of various lengths, and a dysfunctional
car tag for special H&F campgrounds. I'll save you the rest.Just know
that some, apparently un-firable, jackass has put all kinds of effort
into making this the most jerkwater licence system Ive ever run into.

Barbs. I crimp em. And the lifetime supply of hooks Ive accumulated
means this cheapskate will be crimping for the duration. Catch on a
stocking? I think the origins of that story go back to Roderick Hague
Brown, the legendary B.C. fly fishing pioneer, judge, and Western
Canadian fishing writer.

When I was a kid, 15 or so I lived in, NYC Brooklyn to be exact
I had a good time as I as a good athlete and that's what we did then - play
ball
My uncles had some land in a fairly rural area - then
I stayed at my uncle's house and I used to go cat fishing - hitchhiking to
a pond that later was filled in and became the Nanuet mall

One time a game warden who looked like Smokey the Bear & a boy scout leader
came over to me and said " do you have a license, son? "
I said "What are you kidding? **** off!"

Well he threw my ass in jail and called my uncle who told them to keep
awhile me as I deserved it
I was kept awhile

Since then I always buy a license (even if I only fish for 1hour or sop in
an area)and I try to observe the regs but this barbless hook thing scares a
bit- I do crush my barbs
But sometimes - who knows?
There could be a burr
I will have to check them all and
I guess that I will have to look for barbless flies

My question: IYourHO is there any reason to prefer bending down barbs

Experiences to support your notions on this?

I use both. I have a helluva lot of barbed hooks that I am not going
to throw away. I bend the barbs regardless the regulations. This
past June I got interupted by a Maine Game Warden. Scared the hell
out of me by sneaking up behind me and anouncing his presence with a
whisle (lips not a ref whistle).

After he checked my license he asked to see my fly. I had on a barbed
hook with the barbs bent. He held it up to the sky, against some
white water, back up against the sky, and finally let it go saying it
was ok. But, he sure did give it a good look-see. Then, like all
good Maine GWs, he shot the **** with me for about ten minutes while I
continued to fish. I was the only guy on the river. We talked about
mutuals friends who were guides on the river. Nice guy once his
business mode was finished.

I use a Dremel grinder on my hooks. Here you have to use barbless in the
ocean for salmon if using bait. Years ago, I bought a pack of barbless
hooks, in those days it could be a J hook and not a circle like now required
and got about 2 miles offshore and realize the "Barbless" are barbed. Hoped
I would not get checked as in those days they looked for any catch at all.
I think a court finally stomped them in the Q-tip test. Since I hate to
remove barbed hooks from my body, I debarb almost all my fish hooks. Fly's
included. I lost fish on barbed hooks, I lose fish on barbless hooks, so
does not really matter.

For simplicity and convenience's sake, I just buy the TMC SP-BL
("super point barbless") for tying my dry flies. I like the hook
style, they are extremely sharp, and I don't have to worry about
crimping down the barb.

They are more expensive than other hooks, but I don't mind spending
a bit more on hooks, as trying to "save" money there is a false
economy, IMHO.

FWIW, I too have heard the story of the warden using stockings to
check for barbs, but the version I heard was in Alberta, Canuckistan
when they first went barbless some years ago.

I've heard stories about Conservation officers checking for barbs in
barbless only areas by sticking the point through a stocking and
seeing how it comes out. It would be much harder for a bent-over
barb to pass this test.

I don't know if this is real or rumour.

On the tailwaters of Norfork Lake in the C&R area (Norfork River),
F&G checks with paper. Bent barbs often catch on the paper. Even
when barbs that are broken off by twisting, they could leave a burr
than can catch on paper. A friend of mine got a ticket even though
he clearly had the barb bent down because it caught on the paper.

Do you mean to say that they didn't confiscate all his gear and his
rig and haul him off to jail? That's the way I've heard the legend
goes. :-)

No. Doug said that they warden gave him a ticket (maybe $150?). Might
have taken the fly. And he wasn't the only one. He said the warden
just went from fisherman to fisherman and checked each one for license
and barbed hooks. Was giving out tickets to most everyone. I guess if
the warden got DL#s, he could give out a lot of tickets without hauling
anyone in. Could make his ticket / revenue quota easier that way.

I've been checked several times for license (mostly in Tennessee), but
not for barbs. Never been ticketed. I just figure its less stress and

Confirmed was a $100 ticket issued by Ark. F&G.
