I've seen it cited, in variations, to Churchill, P.J.O'Rourke, and a few others. The common variation is: If you're young and not a Democrat, you have no heart. If you're old and not a Republican, you have no brain. As with most such stuff, it's funny, but completely off the mark......some of the smartest liberals I've ever known came to that position late in life. On the other hands, I've seen keen support for a conservative position by young men in my lifetime. Tom |

See http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Winston_Churchill under "Misattributed Quotes". It wasn't Churchill at all, and, in fact, one of the sources in the above article (reproduced below) says it is unlikely Churchill would have said any such thing. From the above article, the quote actually is " If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain. According to research by Mark T. Shirey, citing Nice Guys Finish Seventh: False Phrases, Spurious Sayings, and Familiar Misquotations by Ralph Keyes, 1992, this quote was first uttered by mid-nineteenth century historian and statesman François Guizot when he observed, Not to be a republican at 20 is proof of want of heart; to be one at 30 is proof of want of head. This quote has been attributed variously to George Bernard Shaw, Benjamin Disraeli, Otto von Bismarck, and others. Furthermore, the Churchill Centre, on its Falsely Attributed Quotations page, states "there is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this." Paul Addison of Edinburgh University is quoted as stating: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"" Tim Lysyk |

A Vice President should NOT be as dumb as he appears to me. Is he smarter than me? Who shives a git. He should be brilliant, which he ain't. Ya know why Obama chose him? Life insurance, plain and simple. I don't believe Obama is doing a good job at anything, but I sure as hell wouldn't want Biden sitting in the Oval Office. You really like that Kool Aid, eh? rolls eyes You really believe it all. Sad. Biden is the gift that keeps on giving. I'm glad for more reasons than one that Obama selected him for veep. Dave |

![]() "David LaCourse" wrote in message news:2010041217585150878-dplacourse@aolcom... like I said, Dave, I've seen both of you up close and personal. I've talked and shared meals with both of you. I 've talked politics and world affairs with both of you. You don't come close, either intellectually or in terms of ethics and character. No Kool Aid here, dude, just personal experience and sound judgement. Tom |
