Looking for a reel

Okay folks, enough messin' around. Its 2 1/2 weeks till Penns and I
still don't have a reel for my 'boo. Got the silk line all prep'd.
Rod is smiling at me. No reel.
The rod is a new kind of bamboo called a Tri-Hex.

banner at the top and also in the 4th picture down (excluding the
logo). I can honestly say that its the first piece of bamboo I've
ever lusted after. It is the sweetest piece of Tonkin cane to ever
cross the pond.
I cannot afford a Bellinger, not ready for a second mortgage on the
house. Looking for a Bellinger ("S" handle, black sided) "style" reel
to go on this. I've been outbid on ebay to many times. Does anyone
have a reel that they're willing to part with that would compliment
this rod? BTW, the rod weighs 4.4 oz.

If you absolutely have to have the "S" handle you might look
at the Peerless.

If I had to pick a reel to put on that stick I'd go with the
Hardy Perfect.

I won't get into a discussion of why that cane cut is or is not as
great as the website would want you to believe but to help a friend in
need.

I will not part with any of my S-handled reels but my unsolicited
advice is to avoid the Bill Ballan series of reels. If you want to
know why send me an email.

Bellinger's in the scheme of things are not that pricey, I picked up a
new one in February for under $500 and Mr. Fortenberry is spot on for
the Peerless. But for a lower priced alternative while still getting a
solid reel look at the Hardy Casacpedia for around $350. If you can
live without the S-Handle and still want to be thrifty, the Hardy
lightweight series and whorvis CFO series are classic reels that look
good on a cane rod.

Another reel you might want to look into I have seen only at the
Feathered Hook, I'm sure you know the place. They were selling re-
engineered Plueger Medalists when I dropped in for the first and only
time two years ago. I kept meaning to call and order one but never got
around to it. There's nothing more classic than a Medalist or Hardy on
a cane rod.

The Bellinger Mark I reel had a list price of $550.00. As you know
they have others with a higher price but I like the Mark I. I bought
it from a fly shop at the Chicago Great Waters show. I took delivery
of a Bogdan last week that I had been waiting four years on and with
the father and son both retiring, never thought I would get and next
to what that reel cost, $550 is a comparative bargain.

They look good on bamboo. For $550 you can get at least 10 of them.

I uses a small Hardy Perfect (with a silk line) on my favourite chalk
stream rod, a 6' 6" split cane made for me by Lance Nicholson of
Dulverton.

But it's maybe a little heavy. I'd also consider a more modern reel
(only dates from 1948) - the LRH Lightweight.
