You really deserve a better answer than that, Warren, so here it is.

I know what you were getting at but was already two steps ahead of you.
See below.

Apologizing on ROFF is very easy. It's not dissimilar from jumping the
queue into the National Guard -- a free ticket out of jail. Apologizing
FOUR TIMES for EXACTLY the same thing must get easier with each
repetition. I don't want Dave's apologies. They may be numerous, but
they aren't sincere, and their sincerity seems to decrease with each
repetition. I want him to think before he posts, and before he insults
not me, which doesn't bother me, but before he insults proven patriots
and heroes who happen to disagree with his political opinions.

Yes, but you only propagate the tension by voicing such ideas and not
forgiving. That could be exactly what you think, but saying so may not
be the best course of action. Dave made an apology to you. Did your
response of essentially "don't bother. You've done it before and so I
basically don't accept" do more harm or good? Or would have something
along the lines of "No problem Dave. Thanks for taking the time to
apologize" been more appropriate? I see one as merely putting a person
back on the defensive and only leading to more problems in the future
while the latter deescalates the situation.

By holding a grudge you are in essence limiting the possible actions of
the other party down the road and only contributing to future conflicts.
The later eases tensions which may alleviate some of the tensions that
you hold that keep you from "liking" the other person. Very different
from the scenario that I gave you the other night on the phone IMO.

You are right, Ken, and I was wrong. I should know better than to get into a
political discussion on roff. It just isn't the place, and like wayno says, it
divides friends, something I never intended.

Well done. Hope you delurk relatively soon with some brookie & salmon
tales.

Although I'm guilty as hell on the OT Politics charge, I've made every
attempt to avoid discussing specific people or personalities. I'm not an
insult kind of guy, and for the most part, my friends don't need my
character reference. I'm gonna break my own rule here.

It is clear to me that Dave & I disagree on what's wrong with this country
and what to do about it. It's also clear to me that both of our opinions
are based on a love of what we individually perceive to be what's right
about it. I've met Dave on more than one occasion, fished with him, dined
with him, and talked with him. I've left my children alone with him, which
is more than I'd allow for most of the reprobates here. Among the things
about which I have little doubt is Dave's character and sincerity.

Few people in WWII went a year where they
could be shot or had to shoot someome every day. If people were in combat
a year the medals candy analogy is not realistic.

If people were assigned to line units and spent their year or 13 months
constantly in the field, I have no problem with them receiving any citations
and medals that they could garner. I knew and know folks who spent all
their time on the line and came home with only the everyman medals. I also
know people who spent all their time as REMFs and came home well decorated.

The candy analogy holds better for officers who had a 6 month field, 6 month
staff rotation in many cases so that they could get their ticket fully
punched. Staff officers had better chances of having someone higher up
notice their actions and write them up than the guys at company or platoon
level.

I can't really address the amount of line time people endured in WWII. You
and I both know that units rotated up and back as they were available.
OTOH, some of the folks island hopping were in the thick of it from the
landing until the island was secured. Different times and places.

You've been doing that a LOT lately. ;-) I'm glad you did.

The way I see it ( %-b~ ), Dave realizes his fault and wishes he had never
written the personal insults. Isn't it better that he recognize this after the
fact than not at all? I think so - good on ya, Dave. I've posted stuff here I
wish I hadn't and have (hopefully) had my apology accepted. Should I screw up
again, realize my bad and apologize, I would hope I could be forgiven again.

To Dave - Place this note on your keyboard: Read three times, the third time
after ten minutes, then choose send or cancel. ;-)
To both Dave and Wayno - get yer asses back in gear and post away!
