I'll arrive in the Twin Cities on 7/17 and be departing on 7/26. Any time
between 7/18 and 7/23 would be a good time for me. -- Bob Weinberger La, Grande, OR place a dot between bobs and stuff and remove invalid to send email |

Not surprisingly, it says everything beyond about 3:00 o'clock this afternoon is "Tempora Incognita". Barring an unanticipated emergency call from the White House or yet another plumbing disaster (ah, the charm of old houses!), I should be free anywhere within that time slot. Unless you're interested in wandering about more or less aimlessly looking for fish, my role in planning the itinerary should be limited to nodding assent. I know that both the Rush and the Kinnickinnic (yep, it's pronounced just the way it's spelled) enjoy excellent reputations, and I managed to get skunked on both the Kinnickinnic and the Willow one fine day a few years ago, but that's about the extent of my experience and knowledge of WI streams in the immediate area. I've always suspected (for no good reason) that the St. Croix must be good for smallmouth. I know virtually nothing about MN streams. SWMBO and I will be visiting our first grandchild who celebrates her first birthday on 7/23. My daughter and the grandbaby are here right now visiting. The experience reinforces my observation that, as much as I love them both, they are best taken in short duration doses, interspersed with recuperative fishing periods. -- Bob Weinberger La, Grande, OR place a dot between bobs and stuff and remove invalid to send email |

As will come as no surprise these are not the best dates for trout fishing. On the other hand smallmouth fishing should be very, very good. Your better luck for trout would be a bit further south around Viroqua or even over in MN on the spring creeks there. Of course your best luck for smallies will be in the opposite direction (north) on the lower Namekagan and upper St.Croix and Red Cedar river near Rice Lake. g.c. |

I'll plan on somewhere in the 17th to 24th area, so there will be a weekend in there for the poor souls who still have to go in to jobs weekdays. I'm no longer one of them, bless me. Retired last week. Now all I have to do is wend my way through the group camping reservation system, which seems to change every week or two. -- rbc:vixen,Minnow Goddess,Willow Watcher, and all that sort of thing. At the Midwest Fly show today, I got the smallmouth guys to make on my map where some of the good streams for them are, in case the trout are sulking in the heat or smallies sound like fun to anyone. One of the streams is floatable / canoeable. -- rbc:vixen,Minnow Goddess,Willow Watcher, and all that sort of thing. Often taunted by trout. Only a fool would refuse to believe in luck. Whitewater State Park is reserved to the hilt. First next choice could be Carley State Park, but their group sites suck and you have to drive to good trout water a ways, even though the Whitewater snakes around the campground. There's Beaver Creek Valley, but there's only about one river down there. Pretty enough that I've camped there before taking up fishing, but not much scope and very very little trout water marked as good. And if it rains while you're in there, the instructions for saving yourself and getting out are interesting. Forestville State Park, a bit south of Whitewater State Park, however, has some very nice unreserved group sites. The bluffs aren't as pretty, but they have a creek / brook that they've worked on over the past few years that one can walk to from the campsite, with some specially built lunker holes by the bridge you have to walk over to get to it. It was looking (the small stream) very pretty even 2 years ago when I last walked up there. A Root branch runs all around and through the park. There's another branch of the Root that's good fishing just down at the other end of the park and scattered good / interesting streams nearby. For those who like to drive (Hi, Wolfgang), there's one heck of a lot of trout water within a half hour to hour drive, including Whitewater State Park. Otherwise, it'd almost have to be The West Fork Sportsman's thing over in Avalanche, which is cool. No sticker required to get in, etc.. Pretty, with deep bluffs. Lots of fish rising when Wolfgang started the Traveling show last year in hot June weather. I know everyone's mind is on Penn's, but if it's going to be a MN State Park, it'd be a good idea to start the reservation this week. -- rbc:vixen,Minnow Goddess,Willow Watcher, and all that sort of thing. However, I'll be traveling without camping equipment, so would likely stay in a motel in a nearby town ( e.g. St. Charles if doing the Whitewater, or Preston if doing the Root). Any reason it has to be in MN vice WI? -- Bob Weinberger La, Grande, OR place a dot between bobs and stuff and remove invalid to send email |
