Default Penn's...a scouting run.

Well folks, in the interest of being a knowledgable clavemeister and all that,
I figured I needed 3 days or so in Penn's Valley to refresh my piscatory
memory.
I arrived in Coburn on Thursday morning and paused along Joel's favorite
section above town. Grannom caddis were pouring upstream in clouds over the
water.
Several fish rose, and within a couple hours, several had succumber to dark
hairwing caddis imitations, flush floating imitations and one particularly
large brown trout(19-20 inches, and fat) to a beadhead caddis larva. River
levels are very good for April throughout the area(this could change with
constant rain, but all looks quite promising). I met up with Mike Shaw, got a
few things done around camp and returned to the Creek, this time downstream.
More clouds of caddis, more fish, this time mainly on snowshoe emergers.
Then, the rains came, as they often do on Penn's. It rained overnight into
Friday mid-morning, and the river rose a bit, but not to unwadable or
unfishable levels.
The stocking truck arrived onto the stretch above town, and with it came masses
of local anglers. We were off to Big Fishing Creek, still very nice despite the
rain. Fewer bugs hatched in the chilly air temps, but a few fish succumbed to
the flush caddis, as well as a couple to Red Quills.
Saturday was gorgeous, a warm, sunny, fine day. Water in Penn's was
near-perfect for April, the trout rose in quick spurts in quick, shallow runs.
They were readily fooled by snowshoe emerger imitations, notably by a new
pattern I call a Coyote Ugly. This fly, placed over any spot where a rise had
been spotted, yielded trout, some quite sizeable, although only 3 or 4 went
over 14 inches in length.
Sunday, we awoke to thunder, and more rain. I was hoping the get good bug pics
before leaving time, having been pre-occupied with fishing to that point, but
it was not to be. All in all, it was a productive weekend in Penn's Woods.
Three weeks hence, the clave starts, and I can but count the days!!

Unfair! I'm tying up everything that worked last year and you have a new
killer fly? The pattern man, whats the pattern? Let me guess, you gonna
auction it off on Saturday morning right? I got first dibs on rifling your
fly bins.
Good TR, many would agree.

Keep hacking away at that list, need to fish with ya some more this time
around. I've been staying ahead of schedule myself and even though I had to
skip Tom and Mike's Spring Fling, I'll be poking around the area this
weekend, looking for Hendricksons, Blue Quills, and maybe the end of the
Grannom thing if I'm lucky. Reports are looking pretty impressive so
far...streams are perfect in my part of the Great State also.

How do they look up your way Tom?? Do you get to see Big Pine in your
travels at all??

Glad to hear that your weekend was a good one.

Sorry I didn't make it to Hemlock Acres. It would have been nice to
see you guys and maybe even catch a fish. With the sunny Saturday it
was a busy day on the home front. I've got to get this honey-do list
whittled down if I want to fish more than a day or two during the
clave.
