Yep, it's all true. And the native fish have toxic levels of mercury and
cadmium. A hell of a place to live. I won't even handle the fish from some of the ponds in Springfield. The federal salmon hatchery in Nashua will probably have to close this summer and they are considering burning the 600 or so breeder salmon because they might be too toxic to release. -- Stan Gula http://gula.org/roffswaps "riverman" wrote in message om... Humans are the only animal that doesn't rot away in the environment. We
burry ourselves in and take ourselves out of the environment for a thousand years or so. By eating the fish we can do our part to take the heavy metals and PCBs out of the environment. Eats lots of them and do your part. "riverman" wrote in message om... Wow, check out THIS article!! http://tinyurl.com/2k2p2 Scary, even for primarily C&R fishermen. What is the world coming to? Many toxins and their metabolites have a significant half-life.....best to err on the side of caution. Wolfgang gotta watch those teratogens. |

... Ct books also Handyman Mike Standing in a river waving a stick The Mass, books have had mercury advisories for all native fish and other warnings for most of the ponds for a long time. This PCB issue for hatchery fish is new, I think they started to look into hatchery chow after that study last winter showed high PCB levels in farmed salmon compared to wild stock, USF&W (and presumably lots of states) have been using the same trout and salmon pellets. We have one badly PCB tainted stream (the Housatonic, which ran next to a GE transformer plant) that has had a PCB warning for decades, but this new warning on stocked trout is new. In fact the Mass. common wisdom, touted by DFW people, is that the only safe fish are the hatchery trout. Taint so safe after all, -- Stan Gula http://gula.org/roffswaps |

'Course, today's right-thinking flyfisherperson will only need to start worrying once the advisories call for rubber gloves when releasing fish. ![]() JR |
