Columbia, South Carolina ?

I may have the opportunity to visit beautiful South Carolina sometime in
late September- Columbia area. Is there any reason to bring along some fly
fishing accoutrements to wile away the hours?

You'll be about a 3 hour drive from Walt's shop in NC. There are plenty of
nice places to fish up in that area.

Surprisingly, there is a small trout water nearby. The tailrace from Lake
Murray into the Saluda River has stocked trout. Look at this:

Also, lots of warm water opportunities in rivers and lakes. Next closest
cold water fisheries (trout) are northeast around the GA and NC borders.

There is a stocked tailwater near Columbia, Going west and north of
Clemson/Anderson and if you don't mind a hike there are some trout streams
in the hills but you will not find them on a list of trout water, and go to
the nw corner of the state the Chattooga River is a great wild and scenic
brown trout fishery. Then there's alway North Carolina, Brevard is not too
far and the Davidson.

In other words, they are there. I think Drew is in Charlotte, a bribe might
get him to open up, charlotte and columbia are so close together they might
as well be twin cities.

River flowing out of Saluda, NC about 1.5 hrs up I 26. Just north of
town there are 2 lakes that should yield bass and bream. Smallies should
be found on the neighboring rivers using wooly boogers or crawfish patterns.

Southeast is the Congaree Swamp, but I wouldn't recommend going in there
alone or unarmed. Further down is Lake Marion and the Santee Cooper
area. For best results there I'd hire a guide. Good bass off exposed
stumps and massive cats deep.

Thanks- I'll try to get some research done before we go- I think there is
always a way to find a place to fish :-)
