... Hi. Are their any products for mapping out a lake in 3D? Cheers. For a rough & ready 3D view, see http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richardbartlett/ & go to the Odds & Sods page.Follow the obvious link & you'll see a couple of sample pics plus a downloadable example Excel spreadsheet with instructions (no macros, no viruses!) Its an approach I'm still messing around with so I won't pretend its polished, but it should give you some ideas. hth Richard (Leeds) |

Nice idea - I think you may have something there, if only a little more
detail can be added. Only initial drawback I can see is the way the detailed contours would change as the years/floods etc go by. Now if weed & snags could be overlaid .... Well done! Only initial drawback I can see is the way the detailed contours would change as the years/floods etc go by. Now if weed & snags could be overlaid ... Good idea. I've just had a play around with it & found another rough & ready way to do that. Select the 'map' in Excel & copy it. Now paste it as an image into whatever image editor you've got. I use Paintshop Pro, which supports image layers - meaning I can place the map image in one layer & then draw/paint the additional features (snags etc) in another. Should the contours change dramatically (& I don't reckon that'd be particularly likely on a lake!) the new depth measurements could be used to generate a new Excel map whuch could then be copied as above & used to replace the map layer in the graphic Alternatively I could just get out more :-) Ta for the feedback Richard (Leeds) |

From a mapping point of view theres a piece of software called Matlab
http://www.mathworks.com/index.shtml that will produce a 3d charts. (however its not a simple tool to use and if you buy it its expensive) if you have not ethical problems you could probably get it via kazaa or similar. However for the effore involved in using it I'd stick with excel. |
