Default First Carp of the season

7 am, walked a mile to the river.
Caught one, lost one, smoked two cigarettes, and returned home.
Elapsed time, 1 1/2 hours.

Pictured fish is only a few pounds. 20 inches long. Corn bait

What season would that be then - the close season?

Not necessarily - no close season on some still waters!

Nice fish - one more than I have caught so far!

Thing is with rivers is that they are rarely still.

Ahem - I've had about half a dozen decent sized carp these past few weeks,
about four of them were in double figures, along with a nice chub of about
two pounds and the ugliest tench I've ever seen in my life - half it's head
was missing, but a little thing like that didn't stop it from wolfing down
my luncheon meat!

Default early morning carp

I took three carp in an hour this morning, not bad for an old man with a 6
foot ultralight rod.
(Lucky the big ones were all having a party below the dam)
http://home.comcast.net/~thuxton/gonefishin02.htm
Below the dam were thousands of 20/ 30 pounders, all showing their fins in
the shallow water. I didn't have my doubler lens, so I couldn't get a
really close shot. Imagine the dam wall is 250 feet across, and the carp
were lined up across the entire width of the dam. The shots below are of the
same spot, nearest me. They were actually coming half out of the water at
times, but I couldn't catch them, even after shooting a floppy full.
It reminds me of the Salmon below Foote Dam in September. SIGH

A couple of boys came by about 7am. They were waiting for mom to go to
work, so they could grab their rods. (School ends Friday) They were giving
me some expert angling tips. They use instant oatmeal and worms. (I use
frozen corn) By the time I had packed up and walked below the dam, they
were back. I'm sure we'll spend a lot of time together this summer. They
won't end up in trouble like city kids on the streets.

Default early morning carp

My fishing buddies showed up again this morning. I guess they will miss the
last few days of the school year. (school ends Friday) They won't miss much
fishing, though. I had missed two by the time they came down, the second
fought well for about a minute, then tossed the hook leaving just a tiny
piece of flesh. They stayed just long enough to catch a dozen sunfish for
cut bait, then they headed down below the dam. They told me of catching a
large gar yesterday, and several 27 inch channel cats caught by other
fishermen. After they left, I caught a chunky carp in fine condition, just
in time for their return. They had a small gar and a decent rock bass. We
argued about who had the bigger fish; their gar was longer than my carp (he
had a 6 inch nose), but mine outweighed theirs by 15:1..........

Their method is to fillet and skin the bluegill, and bottom fish the meat in
the slack water of the old mill race. Apparently they have developed a good
method.

Well done!
Word of advice though. If you don't have a carp mat please keep the fish on
wet grass.
