Default Clavemeister's report Lapland Clave

Hi All!

So, once again we held a clave in Sweden, this time with four Americans, two
Finns, three Swedes, a Dutchman, a French and an Australian.
Tom, Don, Bob, Fred, Erik, Myron, Hans, Jerome, Vaughan, Osmo and Jarmo
you're all great guys and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to spend
eight days in the mountains with you all.
The river was as crystal clear as ever and the surroundings equally
beautiful.
We had a good time and the weather was sunny and warm, actually warm enough
for us to take daily swims in the river.
There was one thing that prevented us from having very good fishing though,
there was absolutely no insects to be found !?!? (except for mosquitoes, of
which we had plenty)
I didn't see more than a handful of caddis and/or mayflies during the week
and have no explanation whatsoever for it.
Anyway, we had plenty of scenery, wildlife and friendship around that the
week was a success in spite of the bad fishing.
The biggest trout landed was close to 24 inches, not a bad fish but normally
we would have found more of them than that one. Some 19 inch fish also found
their way to the net.
We also fished a lake that holds Arctic char but due to the warmth we only
caught trout in the 14-16 inch range (I'd guess a couple of hundred of
them).
Wednesday night was a night spent at the foot of the mountain beneath the
cabin where there's a deep pool (say 25-30 feet). Me and Fred cooked trout
and potatoes for everyone and served it with some nice wine, it was very
much appreciated. Funny thing about this river, although the depth of that
pool you could still see every grain of sand at the bottom, it was a surreal
feeling to be hanging over that depth in the boat or when swimming.
The clarity of the water did have the effect that everyone at least got to
see very big fish.
Thursday me and Hans went up the mountain to have a look at the view. As far
as I know Osmo and Jerome also hiked up the mountain on at least one
occasion.
Friday night I once again got to cook trout for some of the guys that joined
in a hike up to the char lake, it was a very nice evening and night (yes, we
fished during the night also).
All other days we more or less split up in smaller groups and went fishing.
I guess I should be happy with the way the clave turned out, only wishing
that some more of those big fish had been more active, but with no insects
around I guess that is what happens.
Myron and Vaughan is still up there and will be coming back today. Hans is
in Arjeplog still and will be fishing Swedish Lapland for another three
weeks.
Oh, I almost forgot: Hans caught the strangest hybrid between a trout and an
arctic char. The fish looked exactly as a trout in the front half and
exactly as a char in the rear half.
The guys knew that it was going to be fairly light outside at midnight but I
still got some surprised comments.
As far as I can tell I will do this clave business at least one more time,
this since I've promised a lot of people to do so.
Pictures will be online as soon as I've developed and scanned them.

Good TR Roger!! Sounds like plenty of fish to go around, and much in the
way of recreation outside of fishing too...I'll keep an eye out for the
Pics, did you get one of that Hybrid?

Would also like to meet up with you again at Penn's next year, or somewhere
down the road, regardless.
