Noisy studs: do the fish care?

I'm trying to decide on what wading boots to get now that my previous
cheapo ones have worn out. From everything I've read in old posts
here, it sounds like studded soles (either felt or aquastealth)
provide the best traction. However, I'm concerned about how much
noise these might make, and whether or not I'd be in regular danger of
spooking the fish.

(I know that I could get cleats of some sort to put over a standard
felt, for esp. tricky wading rivers... but also from what I've read,
it sounds like they're not as good as built-in studs...?)

Any thoughts?

My boots have studded aquastealth soles. They are otherwise fine now
(I had some rusting problems at the beginning), but my concern has
been exactly the noise. Given the choice, I would _not_ buy them now,
because I often fish rocky gently flowing streams; my best guess is
that they must make one hell of a noise underwater in such streams. In
faster rapids, or rivers with softer bottoms, they're probably fine.

But, regarding your original question, do the fish ca I have no
definite answer. I have thought they would, but on the other hand I
read somewhere that trout can not hear regular speech: the frequency
range in speech is above the range which they can sense. Don't know
about other species.

I think the fish care and that loud wading and loud thumping up and down the
bank ... bare minimum ... alert the fish to possible danger and make them
more careful in feeding. Due to a bad knee, I have taken to carrying an
aluminum wading staff I found and I'm quite sure tapping it on the bottom
has scared off fish I was stalking ....

But, in my case as a wading klutz, I find that cleat noise ( and/ or staff
noise ), kept to a minimum, is not nearly as scary to the fish as my rotund
body splashing head first into the water with my prey, so I wear the cleats
and carry the staff as a lesser evil.

I have two pairs of boots and do NOT wear cleats in any spring creek type
waters and after using it to help with the big step getting into the water I
stick the staff in some weeds or silt and wade without it ... often just
the small waves from wading will spook fish in such water, let alone
clanging and banging under the water.

P.S. Sound can't travel from air to water well and that is why normal
talking isn't likely to scare fish -) ... however, IF I curse loudly UNDER
water while submerged from one of my klutzy falls it certainly scares more
fish than just the fall itself

I also think that the fish can hear the studs on the rocks. However, I'm
glad to have them when I fish bigger and/or heavier water where I think
the effect is much less. When I was younger I was a maniac wader and
didn't care about falling or getting dunked. Don't like it anymore.

In most of the popular places that we fish, the fish "see" people quite
frequently whether they are anglers or hikers or ??? If they spooked
from the presence of people, they'd starve to death or become strictly night
feeders. Most fish adapt to this and continue to feed in the presence of
people. However, like you say, they do still become alerted and make
changes in their behavior. Once they are alerted, although they still
continue to feed, they are much more difficult to fool. In places where
fish have little contact with man, and especially in smaller back
country streams, they will usually easily spook and in these places the
studs are a bad idea, IMO.
