I'm thinking about spending the 5 big ones on this, but before I do I'd like
to hear some real world reports on it.

I adore my DC200/GL MBR783 IMX combo. Can cast 1/2 oz. a football field with
the thing. Of course, it costs so much that I dare not actually fish with it
(might scratch it or something), but it sure looks good in the rod rack!

The warrantee is the only sore spot on the reel. Shimano making an
exception for a $500 reel (I *think* it's limited to a year or so) made
me a little uneasy about their faith in electronics. You can get a DC
Conquest (Japanese...no US warrantee) or a DC Calcutta (US limited
warrantee). There doesn't appear to be any difference in the two
models.

Until something goes wrong with the reel. Then there's a big difference.

Well, that's what I'm saying...even if you get the Calcutta (US), you only
get a one year warranty. If something goes wrong, you're hosed Davy. I'm
still wondering why Shimano limited their warranty on their flagship
high-tech baitcaster. Anyway, it's a great reel and a blast to cast (once
you get the hang of it ;-)

Frankly, electronics and water don't mix well, and salt water is a worse
situation. I'm curious about the lifetime of these reels.

I suppose I'll get to find out the hard way ;-) I'll let you know if I have
any problems. I guess once the new wears off a bit, I'll actually fish with
it, but right now it's too precious and too virgin to take off the rod rack
:-)

You've got it backwards. You should be fishing the heck out of it while
it's still covered under warranty. If something is going to go wrong, it's
probably going to go within the warranty period.
