Hey all, I have trailer brakes on my ranger, and I have a plug on the
trailer, I was wondering what do I have to buy in order to be able to use the trailer brakes??? Is there some device I will need to buy to accomodate them? Any help would be awesome. Chris |

Hey Chris,
I didn't know either and found out almost the hard way...long story. Answer: You need to go to your most trusted auto supply store and ask them what they recommend. There are several brnds and prices to choose from. I used a NAPA store because they always have top of the line parts and I did not want to scrimp on being able to stop. ![]() I installed it myself & it was quite easy. (I called the mfg. to make sure I had it right.) They install under the dash on the drivers side and hook up to wiring that is different w/ each brand of vehicle. I am sure you could get a dealership to install it if you needed to??? or your local auto repair shop. Hope this helps. Chris Hi Chris, Unless there has been a change, the only thing you need besides the light plug is the little plug that tells the trailer your backup lights are on. It will then release the brakes so you can back up. When you hitch up, reach under the tongue and push in on the button a couple times to release the brakes. That might not be quite correct about releasing them, but it's necessary to prevent them from draggin supposedly. What you have are hydraulic surge brakes. No outboard device is necessary. No electronic controllers etc. When you slow down, it compresses the tongue on the trailer and activates the brakes on the trailer. The harder you push on the tow vehicles brakes the more pressure applied to the trailer also. You also have a manual switch. That is the aluminum knob with an arrow on it on the top of your tongue. It has a release point that should also allow a vehicle to back up when it doesn't have the backup light plug. Carlos |

I'm with Carlos on this. I have a Ranger and it has surge brakes. Self
adjusting with the load. You probably have the same. If the hitch is a bulky mechanism with an opening for brake fluid on top, then you're in business. If not, you will have to install a controller and wire up the necessary plug for the trailer. Rich P |

Unfortunately my boat is sitting at the marina now in a garage buried behind 500 other boats waiting for the motor to get replaced so I can't go verify all this at the moment, but in April I will definitely look into it further.
