I tie a Lot of Sparkle Duns and some other ties that require precise
handling of small amounts of deer hair ( I use SD's down to 22s ) THE most important thing in producing good Sparkle Duns/ Compara Duns is getting good hair, suitable for the purpose and very fine dubbing (try X-Dub from Blue Ribbon Flies, best I've found ... no connection and all other normal disclaimers ) i.e. good materials make a huge difference. The second most important thing is cutting the correct amount of hair off the hide, for the size hook you are using. Thus, the new ( to me ) trick. Cut the hide up into narrow strips maybe 1/4 inch wide and work from these strips .... it is much, Much, MUCH easier to get the right amount this way as opposed to off a piece several inches square |
